After enjoying a bit more time in the garden, Emilia got up from her seat to return to the mansion. The heat seemed to have dissipated more than earlier in the day. However, Dell followed behind without raising the parasol.
“Should I prepare the necessary dresses?”
“We’ve sent responses to quite a few places. Come to think of it, we didn’t properly consider the families we responded to.”
“It’s the Kerren and Ablio families.”
“…Of all families, those two. It won’t be easy.”
Kerren and Ablio had been supporting Adrian since he was the second prince, firmly establishing their position as a loyal royal faction.
‘They may be friendly towards the Duke, but not towards me.’
Emilia seemed to understand the reason why Dahlia sent responses to those two families. Her presence as the Duchess at their gatherings would have a significant impact on the public.
“If we need to prepare dresses, it might be tight.”
“We can call the dressmaker immediately, so don’t worry. But are you really okay?”
“I’m not sure either. But I can’t avoid it forever.”
Emilia knew what Dell was concerned about.
She was still an unwelcome presence, and rumors would likely circulate about her every move. Even things she didn’t do might be attributed to her.
“Now that the responses have been sent, there’s no turning back. It’s suffocating to stay in the mansion only.”
“The Duke won’t be able to stop you from going out recklessly. As a married couple, he will eventually open his heart to you.”
“Do you really think the Duke will show any sign of that towards me? He will never open his heart to me.”
It was the same for her. The two of them were like oil and water, unable to be mixed.
“His Grace certainly holds a particularly harsh standard for Madam.”
“Yes, you’re right. He and I can never get close. So you should give up on that expectation too.”
Emilia pitied Dell for dreaming in vain. If her position in the duchy were to become more stable, Dell would also become more secure. Unfortunately, that was never going to happen.
‘The wedding is coming up soon, right?’
On that day, she would once again hold a sword to his throat. No matter how many times she was defeated, as long as he didn’t kill her, it meant she still had a chance.
“I’ve heard that everyone wants to attend.”
“People seem to be quite interested in the Duke.”
It was only natural for everyone to be interested in him as he had played a crucial role in placing Prince Adrian on the throne during the process of changing the regime.
“Of course, in the Bartsch Kingdom, it’s inevitable for the Duke’s presence to attract attention. Actually, those with golden hair are quite rare.”
Golden hair had long been a symbol of the royal family. On the other hand, the Jalliar royal family had dark black hair as opposed to golden hair.
Thanks to this, people had gradually forgotten the symbolism of golden hair. However, it was not forgotten that during the previous Stein dynasty, those with splendid golden hair maintained the royal family.
“But he is not of royal blood. They already…”
“That’s true. In other countries, golden hair might be common. Anyway, let’s go inside and rest. We might have to move busily tomorrow.”
At the mention of it being common, Emilia thought of Dahlia’s hair, hidden under the veil.
‘She also had the same blonde hair.’
However, the Stein dynasty had come to an end. The Jalliar royal family had taken the lives of the members when they ascended to power.
Emilia shook her head and cleared her thoughts. She then quickened her steps toward her room, as urged by Dell. If she happened to come across him now, her already uneasy feeling because of Dahlia would only worsen.
Finally stepping out of the garden and heading towards the mansion, a sudden downpour started. Dell hastily opened the parasol to shield her from the rain, but the rain seeped through the thin lace and poured inside.
“Madam, you should go inside quickly, it seems.”
The pouring rain blurred her vision. The refreshing stream of water drenched her whole body, instantly refreshing her senses. Her heart began to beat rapidly once again.
‘Perhaps now, I can escape, can’t I?’
She reached out and touched the scar on her neck. Though it was covered by a scarf, the wet fabric revealed the straight, jagged scar.
“Madam!”
Emilia stood still in her place and looked up at the sky. If the rain continued to shield her, if she became invisible in his sight, then maybe…
A small hope boiled inside her. She quickly scanned her surroundings with a sense of expectation.
“If you want to disappear from sight, why not start by cutting that damn red hair?”
A chilly voice came from behind her. Emilia’s hope crumbled as if to say, ‘When has it ever been that easy?’
“A water-soaked rose, or should I say, a differently wet rose.”
“Greetings, Your Grace.”
Dell quickly bowed his head and greeted him. Emilia, on the other hand, said nothing despite looking at him.
His figure, with the black umbrella on him, seemed like a demon coming to take her life. Standing upright under the pouring rain, it sent shivers down her spine.
Why did his appearance in the fierce downpour seem so chilling?
