He is probably watching her from over there, hidden from sight, observing her every move.
Emilia smiled, raising the corners of her mouth just as he had done. Despite the endless stream of rain flowing down the window, she smiled.
‘…..I thought it was absurd but perhaps that might be the quickest way.’
Her father’s words, “Seduce the Duke,” echoed in her mind. To drive a knife into his back, she needed to capture his heart. If that was the only way to bring him to the brink of despair, Emilia was willing to do it.
Thunk. The chilly rain fell from her body to the ground. The wind was blowing harder now. She hoped for more rain to pour down, covering her completely. With limp hands and her head soaked, her face turned toward the sky, eyes closed, as if she were a lifeless corpse.
Dell spoke to her in a desperate voice,
“Please, Madam, let’s go back to the mansion.”
She wished she were alone. She longed to dissolve into the pouring rain, disappearing without a trace.
“Madam, please.”
Emilia weakly looked at Dell, whose feet were shifting restlessly. If she were to disappear, this child might lose her life because of her.
“It’s okay. I won’t die from this.”
“…..Madam.”
“Perhaps it would be better if I did die.”
Would she perish from hypothermia if she continued to be pelted by the rain? Would she end up lying helpless from a high fever, unable to get up?
“Dell, could you go to the mansion and bring an umbrella and a blanket? It’s too cold for me to move.”
“How can I leave you alone and go back to the mansion by myself!”
Dell was on the verge of tears now. The rain was pouring down on her face, making it impossible to distinguish between tears and raindrops.
“You can’t carry me, you can’t lift me. I don’t want to step on the ground any longer with these ruined shoes.”
“Ah…! Yes, yes! I understand. Then I’ll go quickly and call the knight. Please wait a moment!”
Dell dashed to the estate, barely lifting her unyielding steps. She didn’t even care about the muddy water splashing on her soaked skirt.
Emilia watched Dell’s retreating figure quietly. Her body swayed unexpectedly, and soon she collapsed to the ground, catching herself with both hands. With a bluish pale face, Emilia relaxed her body.
Her entire body trembled from the cold. She could feel her body temperature dropping, but a faint smile crept onto her lips.
In her hazy consciousness, Emilia felt a sense of freedom, almost as if she was floating. Her body tilted to the side and she lay down on the grass.
“The scent of grass.”
She didn’t particularly enjoy rainy days, but strangely, today she didn’t mind. Rainwater flowing down her long eyelashes blurred her vision. Through the haze, she saw someone approaching.
‘She’s quick.’
Whether it was Dell urging the knight or not, a tall figure was coming toward her through the rain. Gradually, she saw expensive black shoes in her field of vision. Emilia’s eyes widened before returning to their original size. She could make out the well-tailored dress pants above the shoes.
Thump. His boot touched her arm as if to confirm whether she was alive. Emilia lifted her head slightly and saw Mikhail, wearing a black umbrella, gazing down at her with an inscrutable expression.
“What a pity. Came to clear the body and found you alive.”
Her body trembled at his low chuckle.
“Y-Your Grace!”
“Kyaah! Madam!”
Immediately, familiar voices followed. Byne and Dell’s urgent footsteps approached. Even in her fading consciousness, Mikhail’s voice remained distinct.
“Get rid of this.”

Emilia couldn’t remember how she had ended up in the bedroom after collapsing in the rain. There was only one thing clear in her mind—the way he had treated her, worse than discarded objects, his voice, and his demeanor, remained vivid.
“My body feels so heavy.”
She felt like a scorching hot boulder. It was as if she was sinking into a swamp, constantly being pulled down.
Perhaps that’s why she felt the chill. Despite the thick blanket covering her, her shivering didn’t subside.
‘…Cold.’
She pulled the blanket closer around her. Yet the chills persisted. Groaning, she buried her face in the covers and closed her eyes.
‘How did it come to this?’
It was just a stroll in the rain, getting caught in a sudden downpour. The day hadn’t been bad. But that short encounter with him seemed to have taken everything from her.
