Madam Kerren forcibly maintained her distance to Emilia, perhaps begrudgingly at first, but whenever their eyes met, she would smile as if nothing was amiss.
Emilia admired Madam Kerren’s swift ability to put on a facade.
‘She’s quite skilled.’
But this was only the beginning. Women began to gather around her, one by one, and started scrutinizing Emilia, from her hair ornaments to her accessories, dress design, and even her shoes. Every detail caught their attention as they appraised her worth with their glances.
Emilia pretended not to notice the evaluating looks and shifted her focus elsewhere. Meanwhile, whenever their eyes met, the gentlemen would turn their heads and feign a cough.
Emilia pondered when she could escape this dull and uncomfortable place, focusing her energy on maintaining her composure.
As the gazes that were fixed on her gradually dispersed, Madam Serene suddenly spoke up.
“Miss Deila, come to think of it, didn’t your fiance, Baron Hisen, give you a ring this time?”
“Oh, yes. It was a large diamond ring,” another woman nearby chimed in.
Lady Deila raised the corners of her mouth with a smirk, looking excited like a cat that found a toy.
“The rumors have already spread everywhere.”
Deila lifted her hand, on which the ring was placed, and looked at Emilia.
“It’s a ring that my fiance personally entrusted to the craftsmen at ‘Delan’ on Brethea Street.”
‘Delan’ was a place known for handling only expensive jewelry. It was said that if a man gifted a ring purchased from this place to a woman, she wouldn’t refuse his proposal. The diamond, appearing to be at least 5 carats, sparkled on Deila’s finger.
“As expected, when it comes to conveying sincerity, there’s nothing better than jewels, is it? Wouldn’t it be so sad if a romantic proposal were missing from an engagement based on love?”
Madam Serene said, her expression turning sour.
“Oh my! If I couldn’t receive even one ring from the man I’m supposed to live with for the rest of my life, I’d be so ashamed that I wouldn’t be able to show my face.”
“That’s right. I also agree with that statement. Wouldn’t it be terrible for the other person as well? To have to live with a man who doesn’t want to give a ring and yet expects to share a lifetime together,” Madam Kerren added, and everyone nodded in agreement.
“It’s a dreadful situation. If you have to live without giving your heart, it would feel like selling your body. You might give expensive things, but if you don’t give a ring as a symbol of your love, it’s like saying something is missing.”
“It’s terrible indeed. If every night you have to forcefully spread your legs and the only sounds heard between the two are rough breathing, then you’re no more than a doll for satisfying desires.”
They all chuckled, glancing at Emilia’s empty hand.
Momentarily puzzled by the sudden change of topic, Emilia quickly understood their intention.
She had not yet received a proposal or any gift like a ring from Duke Heinrich. Naturally, her position as the Duchess was purely due to political expediency and the stability of the regime.
“But if that partner is Duke Heinrich, I could happily be a doll for him in any way.”
“He’s the one everyone desires, so of course, Madam Heinrich would gladly welcome him.”
A chill smile settled on the faces around Emilia.
“Why don’t you tell us the story instead? With his sturdy thighs, it seems like the night would be quite exquisite, wouldn’t it?”
“Madam Heinrich, if we’ve asked you an uncomfortable question, it’s okay not to answer. Though it’s a crude question, it’s just a concern about your relationship, so please just let it pass.”
What expression would that man have made if he were here? The women treated him as a s****l object and lewdly scrutinized his body, freely discussing him. How is it that they seem to know more about his body than she does?
‘It’s a shame.’
Surely his expression would have been worth seeing. He must have looked at them with discomfort or disdainful glances.
‘The more I think about it, the more I regret it.’
Unaware that she would regret not seeing his contorted face because she came to the banquet alone.
Emilia smiled, her green eyes suddenly filled with joy. But soon she blushed shyly, lowering her eyes slightly. The atmosphere around her changed in an instant.
She glanced at one spot and then slowly spoke up.
“You should hear the story directly from the person involved.”
