Then,
“Madam.”
Startled, Emilia’s body trembled.
It was Dahlia’s voice, sweet yet gentle, imbued with elegance.
‘Good heavens, I had completely forgotten.’
Emilia had completely forgotten that Dahlia had followed her.
‘How could I forget something like this?’
For a moment, she felt dizzy.
Fortunately, Mikhail was engaged in conversation with the gentlemen and wasn’t paying attention to this side.
“What’s the matter?”
“Your ribbon seems to have come undone, Madam.”
Dahlia naturally reached for the ribbon tied in Emilia’s hair.
Showing herself openly on stage like this would attract attention.
Emilia grabbed Dahlia’s hand and gently pulled it down, then led her with a calm and composed gesture.
“Follow me. It’s better if you stay over there.”
Despite her apparent casualness in addressing Dahlia, Emilia’s heart was racing.
She took Dahlia to where the other maids attending the nobility were waiting while looking around cautiously.
She whispered just loud enough for Dahlia to hear, her green eyes not ceasing to scan the surroundings.
“Don’t speak or make eye contact with anyone. You’re too noticeable as it is…”
“That’s why I’m wearing this hat. I won’t be discovered.”
Dahlia seemed confident that her maid attire would disguise her effectively.
But anyone with a keen eye would surely notice that she was different from the other maids.
Emilia left Dahlia there and positioned herself at the end of the hall.
‘At least she’ll be less noticeable there.’
As she breathed a sigh of relief, the herald called out loudly.
“Presenting the kingdom’s one and only brilliant sun, His Majesty Adrian von Konrad!”
Adrian had not attended Marquis Kerren’s party yet he was present at Count Ablio’s.
The bustling hall suddenly fell silent, as if someone doused them in cold water.
Adrian entered the hall, and a wave of greetings followed his path.
Emilia watched him with an uneasy gaze. She intentionally avoided eye contact and pretended to be distracted.
The host, Count Ablio and his wife, hurriedly greeted Adrian.
“Your Majesty, it is an honor to have you at our ball.”
“I’m pleased to be able to attend such a delightful event. I hope my sudden arrival isn’t an inconvenience.”
“Your presence alone makes this day unforgettable for us.”
Count Ablio could hardly stay calm. He was bewildered, seemingly unable to discern if this was a dream or reality.
They had sent an invitation but probably hadn’t expected him to come. Not surprisingly, Marquis Kerren’s joy and sorrow were interspersed.
Then, Emilia’s gaze inadvertently met Mikhail’s, who was still among the gentlemen.
‘How long has he been looking this way?’
It wasn’t so much a chilling look as it was indescribably peculiar.
Emilia turned her head away from his gaze, but her eyes accidentally brushed past where Dahlia was standing.
‘Don’t draw attention.’
Instinctively, Emilia headed towards Dahlia. The fact that Mikhail was watching was irrelevant.
She had a gut feeling that if Adrian took interest in her, it would lead to trouble.
“Follow me quietly. We need to get out of here right now.”
But Dahlia remained motionless, standing frozen, her expression was stiff as she stared at something.
Turning her head slowly towards where Dahlia’s gaze lingered, Emilia’s eyes accidentally met Adrian’s who was looking at her. She quickly turned back towards Dahlia.
Dahlia’s red eyes shimmered oddly. It appeared both ecstatic and sorrowful.
“…Dahlia?”
There was no response to her name. Emilia stepped in front of Dahlia, blocking her view.
“Ugh, hah.”
Suddenly, Dahlia began to breathe heavily as if coming to her senses.
“I said my hair was a mess and needed your help. What are you doing standing there?”
There was a note of anxiety in Emilia’s reprimanding voice.
The two quickly left the hall and headed towards the corridor.
* * *
“It hurts. Let go now.”
Dahlia complained as her hand was grasped. Emilia looked around and then released her wrist.
“The King saw you. He’ll definitely think something is odd.”
“Even if he thinks it’s odd, what can he do? Sister is the one acting strange. I’m just a simple maid right now.”
Dahlia took off her hat and shook out her bound hair with her hands. Her golden hair cascaded over her shoulders, drawing her gaze momentarily.
“Miss Dahlia!”
“No one’s here. It’s suffocating, that’s all.”
Dahlia looked around, then twisted her hair back up and firmly put her hat back on.
“Why would the King be interested in a maid? From what I hear, he’s a pervert whose thing won’t stand up unless it’s someone else’s woman.”
Her remark was blunt.
Emilia felt a wave of regret for having brought her along.
