“The conversation ends here, so we’ll take our leave now. I hope everyone has a pleasant evening.”
As Johann stood up and helped me to my feet, once again, thankfully, the Major didn’t try to stop us.
“I’ll see you again, Rize Eineman.”
As always, he provoked me by treating me as a woman without a husband…
“I’ll see you too.”
He looked at my husband with a piercing gaze and twisted his lips. It seemed he was about to provoke him again, but…
“Johann Renner.”
The only thing that came from the Major’s mouth was Johann’s name.
The moment we stepped outside the barn, I let out a sigh of relief.
‘I didn’t end up revealing that I’ve been going in and out of his bedroom.’
I had avoided the worst disaster.
It was truly unexpected; that wasn’t the conversation I anticipated.
“Your husband is a fraud. A devil with an angel’s face.”
The Major’s wager?
That was something I didn’t need to worry about.
Johann’s carriage, which he had asked about, was unlikely to still be waiting for us.
“I’ll bring my carriage over right away, so just wait a moment.”
Mr. Koehler said he would fetch the carriage from his home and personally take us to the town of Eschbron where we live. Clearly, we must have seemed pitiful after enduring hardships among those rude soldiers.
The unlit dirt path was frightening due to the blackout. I buried my face in Johann’s chest, waiting for Mr. Koehler to return, when he suddenly spoke something obvious yet unexpected.
“The Major isn’t a good man.”
“…I know that. But why the sudden comment…?”
I looked up sharply at the sudden thought that crossed his mind.
“Are you doubting my relationship with the Major?”
Johann looked at me with eyes darker than the darkness that enveloped us. Was he still suspecting that my affections had changed back then?
“Johann, it’s not like that…”
“Rize, if you like him, then I have no right to stop you.”
“Why don’t you have the right to stop me? You’re my husband…”
But even though I was his wife, I couldn’t stop him from liking Dana.
“More importantly, why would I like such a rude and uncivilized man? I have great taste in men. So you are the only one for me, for my whole life.”
Johann looked at me with a bittersweet expression for some reason before lowering his gaze.
“I’m not a good man either. I’m just trying to be one.”
Ah… Johann realizes his own faults.
I see. I must lack discernment when it comes to men.
His worries made sense. But that didn’t justify his concern that I might be swayed by another bad man.
“Johann, I don’t like him.”
I looked him straight in the eyes, enunciating each word clearly so that Johann could feel the disgust and anger I had toward that man. He didn’t ask me to clarify, so I must have conveyed my feelings well enough.
“Rize, but if he forces you to do something you don’t want to do, and if he has something on you…”
Johann gripped my shoulders firmly, as if urging me. It seemed he wanted to confirm whether I had feelings for that man before saying this.
“Promise me you won’t strike a deal with him just for my sake.”
Just for? How could he think of himself as just that? He is my everything.
I could do anything for Johann. Because of that, if Johann asked me not to, I wouldn’t.
“I promise.”
The fact that he was making such a request likely meant that he had confirmed with his own eyes that the Major had me under his control as a weakness.
“One more thing. I want you to promise me something.”
Johann’s request didn’t end there. This time, his gaze was more earnest as he looked at me.
“…What is it?”
I didn’t know what it was, but I swallowed nervously, sensing that it was serious.
“Promise me you won’t doubt me because of what the Major says.”
“Ha… what kind of nonsense is that? Why would I believe the devil’s words…?”
As I burst into laughter, I caught a glimpse of a red dot at the edge of my vision. Startled by the light that shouldn’t be seen at night, I turned my head toward it and found myself staring into the gleaming eyes of the Major behind the faint glow.
Moments ago, I heard the sound of the barn door opening and closing in the distance—it was the Major coming out. He stood quite a ways from us, so he must not have overheard our conversation. And he was far enough away that I wished this light would attract a bomb to drop over there.
Just as I was lost in that thought, Johann followed my gaze and turned his head in that direction as well. Once again, the two men were glaring at each other. As the tension began to suffocate me, I prayed for Mr. Koehler to return quickly, hoping nothing would happen.
But Johann did what I desperately wished he wouldn’t.
“Just stay here for a moment.”
He intended to speak with the Major alone. No, he couldn’t. I didn’t know what the man might say. I tried to hold him back, but Johann brushed my hand away and walked off.
“Johann!”

That cunning bastard.
“Don’t deceive me.”
He looked at me, warning me, but he showed no change in expression and listened calmly. He had to know that I was referring to him, yet he pretended otherwise, audaciously.
“That kind of man is hardly a husband. He simply holds on to a poor woman, shackling her in marriage and exploiting her like livestock.”
You, of all people. You’re not the husband of Rize Eineman. You’re just pretending to be her husband, deceiving a woman who has lost both her memory and her husband.
