The classroom was small and everything looked old, but it was clean and cozy. Perhaps it was because of the warmth emanating from the fireplace on one side of the wall, or because of the gentle afternoon sunlight streaming in through the windows.
‘I bet everyone will be nodding off after lunch.’
I had a vague feeling that I must have experienced that too. Although the classroom scenery seemed unfamiliar, it also felt strangely familiar, perhaps because I had attended school before.
Even on the coldest winter day, was being outside better than being in the classroom? There were only about six female students remaining in the classroom. When the children who had been whispering in the corner noticed me and made eye contact, they exchanged silent greetings.
The students, with curious eyes, looked to be around seven years old. They seemed much younger than the grade Johann was originally supposed to teach.
‘What happened?’
I’d have to ask over lunch. Johann took the lunch from the basket I handed him and neatly laid it out on the desk, then brought over a chair and placed a cushion on it.
“Sit here.”
So we sat around the teacher’s desk and had our meal together. Today’s lunch consisted of sandwiches with boiled eggs, ham, cheese, and other fillings.
“Isn’t this a bit too much?”
Johann asked, surprised by the thicker sandwiches compared to usual.
“It’s the first day.”
It might seem like we’re living too lavishly these days, but…
“You might get ignored if you seem too poor.”
That’s why I put so much effort into the lunch.
“Did you put on makeup for the same reason?”
He could be sarcastic sometimes. Johann didn’t pretend not to notice that I had also put in extra effort into my appearance.
“If the teacher’s wife looks too shabby, you might get ignored too.”
“You’re already so beautiful that you stand out wherever you go.”
Johann was thinking of Major Felkner, and I was right.
“Was everything okay today?”
“I didn’t have anything out of the ordinary…”
Johann looked at me with a puzzled expression, understanding my nuance that something might have happened to others, as he poured tea into my cup.
“The Major knew today was your first day at work, and that you’re a writing teacher. I never mentioned it.”
“So, the Major was checking up on me.”
“Because of me, there’s generally a lot of interest in you, but it’s not exactly positive…”
“Are they trying to find weaknesses…?”
Johann’s face was overly serious, so I couldn’t help but smile slightly in the midst of our serious conversation.
“Do you think there’s anything to find if they were to dig?”
The man with the nickname ‘Priest’. Moreover, Johann was not only faithful but also so diligent that he had no flaws.
“I’m not worried about that at all, but I’m concerned that he might harm you.”
I leaned in close to Johann, who was lost in thought, and whispered softly.
“The gun, should I give it to you?”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Johann shook his head and asked, “What did he say about me?”
“He asked me to bring the writings you’ve done.”
At that moment, Johann’s expression darkened as if a sudden cloud had covered the window.
“Why?”
“The Prime Minister is looking for someone to write speeches and statements. He said if your writing skills are good, he’d recommend you for the position.”
“So, he’s readily willing to recommend me, the thorn in his side, for such a good position.”
“That’s what I think too.”
I have no idea what ulterior motive there might be for asking for the writings, but if it’s him, he would never willingly seat Johann in such a good position.
If it’s him.
As I walked back, I gently brought up the thought that had occurred to me upon hearing that the Prime Minister was looking for a writer.
“If you become the Prime Minister’s ghostwriter, it’s a tremendous advancement, isn’t it? Wouldn’t it be really good if you could apply for that position through someone else?”
Then he’d receive more money, more ration cards, and various materials and benefits through different channels, much more than now.
“Could you ask the trustworthy high-ranking officers or the village chief or the priest to connect you?”
But Johann shook his head without even considering it. Not a single thought.
Actually, my desire for Johann’s success wasn’t solely because of poverty. I had a much more important reason not to let go of that position.
“The easiest way for the Major to make me a woman without a husband is to get you back into service.”
In other words, Johann’s life.
“Now that you’ve completely recovered, the Major might use his influence to send you back to the front lines. He might do that.”
But if Johann became favored as an aide to the Prime Minister, even if the Major tried, he wouldn’t be able to send him to the front lines. Though Johann sympathized with my worries, he still seemed uninterested in the position of the Prime Minister’s ghostwriter.
“Don’t worry, Rize. I won’t leave you alone and go to the military.”
Are there any other sharp edges? Even so, I still couldn’t understand why Johann showed no interest in the position of ghostwriter.
Isn’t working under the most powerful person a proud position that every citizen dreams of? No matter how modest Johann may be, I didn’t know he lacked such ambition.
“If you want, do you want me to kill him? If you want, I can do that”
I thought he would do anything to protect me, us. Perhaps it was just talk.
“Rize, never give my writings to anyone. And if he asks about us, don’t answer him obediently like now. If he makes any strange speculations about us, tell me.”
