“Let it be forgotten. Leave only the love that cannot be forgotten.”
Johann whispered this as he kissed my forehead, seemingly unaware that I had woken up. He couldn’t have known.
I had frozen the moment I awoke.
The hug that had once felt so natural now seemed awkward. Johann felt like a different person before falling asleep—a contrast between the man in my dream who loved another and the Johann who loved only me seemed to blur.
‘It’s just a dream, don’t be foolish…’
I buried my face back into Johann’s chest and closed my eyes.
‘It was a strange dream.’
But a sudden thought made me open my eyes wide.
‘Was it really just a dream?’
* * *
A day has passed since I woke up, but the dream still feels vivid.
‘Did Johann truly not forget Dana?’
The more I think about it, the less it feels like a mere dream. It’s not just the vividness that makes me doubt.
In the dream, Johann had feelings for a woman named Dana. It wasn’t mutual; it was unrequited love.
But Dana had someone else, and that person warned Johann not to covet his lover.
Could my imagination, no matter how rich, fabricate such a detailed and complex scenario about ‘Dana,’ a woman unknown to me? It doesn’t seem like a dream.
‘If it’s a memory, did Johann care for another woman, even someone else’s?’
These thoughts circled in my head all night until I found myself being summoned to the bunker before dawn.
‘Snap out of it.’
I finally forced the thoughts away as I approached the entrance to the wild dog’s den.
“You can go straight in today.”
The soldier who escorted me to the Major’s bedroom door said this and left. It seemed the woman had left early today. The Major wouldn’t have called me if that were the case.
I prepared myself for the usual scene as I opened the door, only to be taken aback by the unexpected.
The woman hadn’t left yet.
The naked woman lay face down beside the Major, gasping for breath, while the Major sat leaning against the headboard, smoking a cigarette. The moment I opened the door, the humid, stale air hit me. It seemed that I had just walked in right after their affair.
Why had the soldier said I could just walk in?
“I’m sorry.”
I stammered, startled and attempted to close the door again, but the Major flicked ash from his cigarette and called out to me.
“Come in.”
“No, I’ll wait outside.”
“I said come in.”
The Major’s voice was a growl with an intense glare. I then realized this wasn’t a miscommunication; he had deliberately called me into the room knowing the woman was there.
‘…What is he trying to do?’
I froze in place, making it clear I wasn’t going to enter.
“Lady Rize, shall I come to fetch you? Unless you prefer being dragged here by a naked man…”
As the Major made a move to stand up, uncovering himself from the waist down, I blurted out a desperate but implausible excuse.
“I need to keep the door open.”
“Keep it open.”
His response was dismissive, as if bothered by the obviousness of my statement. He didn’t even bother to ask the woman if she was okay with the door remaining open.
“Uhng…”
The woman, clearly awake, did not object to keeping the door open. Perhaps she wasn’t fully aware of the situation yet. Seeing empty liquor bottles rolling on the floor, I was convinced of it.
The thought of how embarrassed and distressed she would feel if she realized that soldiers might have seen her exposed bothered me deeply.
But I couldn’t enter and close the door either. Rumors would spread that I, too, had rolled around on that bed with the Major and another woman.
“Major…”
“Why?”
Ultimately, I had no choice but to enter with the door open, signaling with my hands and eyes, pleading for him to cover the woman with a sheet.
However, to the Major, who viewed the women he slept with no differently than pigs in a sty, my plea was as absurd as asking him to dress a pig. He only scoffed in response.
“Quite demanding today, aren’t you? I usually don’t cater to demands from women unless they’re quite… submissive, but it seems all my past leniencies have made you think I’m your pet. Should I show you who’s in charge here?”
As the Major crushed his unfinished cigarette into the ashtray and stood up, I recoiled in fear, contradicting my previous statement with my actions.
“Oh, don’t come any closer. I’ll come in.”
Finally, the Major chuckled, sat back down, and lit a new cigarette.
Reluctantly, I stepped forward, keeping my eyes fixed on the bed as a guard against any unpredictable actions from the Major.
My face burned and my heart pounded. The shock revealed that, though I had seen naked men before, the sight of a man and woman together in such a state was new to me.
‘Who would expose someone to such a thing?’
Except for this beast whose head was only filled with lust.
I didn’t know why he was doing this, but since he had called me into the room with a woman present, it was unlikely he would just let me leave easily. I hoped the woman would regain her senses and leave quickly.
“Uh…”
The woman lying on the side of the room closer to the door began to moan as she started to sit up. Perhaps she was coming to her senses.
I started to worry about her. With the door wide open and a cleaner present, she would be surprised.
I decided to pretend I hadn’t seen anything to spare her dignity.
Just as I was about to avert my eyes from the bed, forced by the Major’s actions,
