“Since you only know your husband, the issue must be with him. Has he secretly gathered gambling debts? No, judging by your gaunt cheeks, he must have done something worse. Is he finally tired of your dependence and seeking a divorce? Or is he demanding you earn money by any means, even selling yourself? Or is it something else?”
It seems that the only person who knows nothing but my husband is the Major.
“Hmmm… In that case…”
The Major paused to think for a moment before continuing with more speculation.
“Could it be that your husband turns out not to be your husband at all, or that he’s an enemy spy, or that he looks exactly like a fugitive, or that he’s a deserter…?”
All the guesses turned out to be wild shots. So, I let my mind relax and continued pretending to clean while focusing on the thoughts that had been preoccupying me.
“Aren’t you embarrassed to be coveting another woman’s husband while in your current situation?”
The man in my memory had said something like that. At first, I thought it referred to rank or status, but now it seemed to mean Johann’s married status.
But how was that man related to Johann? He resembled Johann quite a bit, though not enough to be mistaken for a twin, but certainly as a sibling. I couldn’t remember who he was. How could I recall a non-existent memory?
“Well then.”
The Major, who had been droning on with incorrect guesses, lit a cigarette and chuckled.
“Is your husband having an affair?”
“…….”
“…Is this the correct answer?”
The Major was surprised to find that the joke he made, believing it to be a wrong answer, was actually correct. He even dropped the cigarette he had been holding.
“No.”
“Really?”
I thought I hadn’t shown any reaction. I hadn’t looked him in the eye or avoided it, and I hadn’t stopped cleaning. So how could he have figured it out?
“I can’t believe it.”
Despite quickly arriving at the answer, the Major took a long time to actually believe it.
“Is Johann Renner having an affair?”
Not currently, but in the past. No, if he still can’t forget that woman, then he must still be having an affair.
“I’ve never heard such a thing….”
The Major muttered again, taking another drag on his cigarette. Never heard it, huh? It seemed he had been snooping around Johann after all.
“Do you know who he’s having an affair with? If not, I can find out for you. If you want, I can even arrange surveillance to catch them in the act. What do you think? Not interested? You might be soon. Anyway, let me know if you change your mind. I can help with that much without any cost.”
The Major didn’t even pretend to hide his ulterior motives, and his brazen attitude almost made me laugh, but all that came out was a sigh.
“I can’t help you either, Major.”
“Why? Is your husband’s mistress someone important, like the daughter of a high official?”
“It’s not that…”
I hesitated for a moment, then whispered with a pained expression as if I hated myself for it.
“I dreamt that Johann loved another woman…”
“…A dream? Ha, this is absurd.”
As expected, the Major began to think I was a madwoman who couldn’t distinguish dreams from reality. I worried that my weak lie might not work with someone as sharp as him, but since it was true that I had such a dream, it couldn’t be a lie.
“Get a grip. If you’re going to be obsessed with your husband, at least keep it in check. I heard you might have some jealousy issues, but this is quite severe.”
Had Brigitta said that about me? I decided not to bother clarifying, as the Major would believe that Johann’s other woman was just a figment of an increasingly jealous wife’s imagination.
And I hoped the Major wouldn’t have a hobby of pestering a madwoman like me.
Of course, my wish was not granted. The Major continued to call on me, even starting to do so every day, even on days when there were no traces of him having s-x. It had been quite some time since the Major had last called Brigitta and did it in front of me.
“Rize Einemann, are you really losing your mind? Is it not just your memory that was affected by the head injury, but something else as well?”
The Major continued to believe that I was like a corpse due to that dream.
“How captivating could Johann Renner be that you’re so distraught over a mere dream of an affair? If it were real, I’d end his life immediately. Pathetic. If it comes to that, I’ll kill him instead of you.”
Killing Johann?
It didn’t cross my mind. It was the memory of similar words I’d heard before that struck me.
“So Johann Renner is hiding the reasons behind his marriage to you. If you found out, you might want to kill your husband like before.”
The Major was wrong about the latter part, but he was right about the former. Johann didn’t hide why he married me out of shyness; he did it deliberately.
“Rize Einemann, think carefully. If there’s nothing to hide, there’s no reason to keep it secret. Doesn’t that seem strange?”
The circumstances of our marriage must not be honorable.
“What are you doing?”
The Major’s thunderous shout jolted me awake.
Sizzle.
Only then did I notice the smell and sound of burning. I had been lost in thought while ironing, causing the sleeve of the Major’s shirt to become completely scorched.
“Oh no, what do I do?”
Clang.
“Ah, stop!”
