In my haste to put away the iron, I accidentally placed it on the edge of the ironing table. The wobbly table lost its balance and toppled forward with a crash, making a mess on the floor.
“Unbelievable.”
The Major, who had been buttoning his shirt, approached and commented sarcastically. My face burned with embarrassment. Repeatedly making such foolish mistakes. Now I had even left scorch marks on the carpet. I needed to clean up quickly.
“Ah!”
Still dazed from my blunder, I made an even more foolish mistake. I tried to pick up the charcoal spilled on the carpet with my bare hands.
“Are you out of your mind?”
The Major, having stepped back, began to scold me loudly.
“Did I tell you to kill yourself or just that bastard? You’re getting creative with your methods. If you want to die, shove that charcoal down your throat. Will that kill you? It’ll just hurt.”
In an instant, my fingertips were already burning red. The searing pain began to set in. I couldn’t believe what I had done, even as I felt it.
“Rize Einemann, what’s the problem with you?”
The Major, having poured water into a glass, asked me.
“Is it really reasonable to act like this over a dream?”
It’s not a dream.
“Ugh…”
Having made three ridiculous mistakes in a row and sitting there dazed, I made a fourth mistake.
I couldn’t suppress the wave of sorrow and ended up crying.
“Waaah…”
Once it started, it didn’t stop. Crying like a child in front of others, especially in front of Major Felkner who seemed to be waiting for me to slip up, was both embarrassing and miserable, making me cry even more.
The Major, who had bent down towards me, stopped as soon as I burst into tears. Perhaps taken aback, he just stood there silently.
“It’s more fun to see you cry under me.”
At that moment, the sight of him reaching out to me made my tears suddenly stop. I saw him clearly as my tears dried up.
“Gasp…”
Before I could avoid it, he grabbed my wrist. Terrified, I tried to pull away, but the Major only tightened his grip, refusing to let go.
“L-Let go of me.”
“I’m not trying to make you grab my c-ck or anything. That would just make it worse since it’s hot.”
He placed my hand into the glass of cold water. As soon as my fingertips were submerged, the pain eased significantly.
“…Thank you.”
The Major, hearing my thanks, clicked his tongue in disbelief.
“What is that husband of yours doing? If your wife is losing her mind, he should be taking you to the hospital.”
No doubt, Johann had noticed my odd behavior long before now. It’s not like he was doing nothing.

“Rize, how did this happen?”
Johann was appalled as soon as he got home. He unwrapped the bandages from my fingers and looked pained.
“Oh my goodness…”
It used to make me happy when Johann showed concern, but now I felt every emotion except happiness. Even his expression seemed untrustworthy.
“I burned my hand on the kettle.”
I didn’t feel too guilty about the lie anymore.
“Rize… I told you not to touch dangerous things. I’ve told you that multiple times.”
Johann was aware of my condition, which is why, for a while now, he had prohibited me from doing anything that might cause injury, like cooking or sewing.
“I forgot.”
It was a casual response, but Johann wasn’t taking it casually. He looked at me with increasing worry and kept asking questions.
“What was the menu this morning?”
“An oatmeal with walnuts and honey.”
“Do you remember where we went for dinner last night?”
“We had dinner at Principal Werner’s house.”
“Do you recall what Mr. Koehler gave us at the church last Sunday?”
I pointed to the tulip pot by the window.
Johann’s persistent questions about recent events were meant to see if I was forgetting not just memories from before the accident but also those from after it. Thankfully, Johann, like the Major, was mistaken.
“Johann, I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not fine. I’ll find a hospital.”
“I’m not sick. I just haven’t been sleeping well lately.”
“How can you say you’re fine when you haven’t been sleeping? Rize, be honest with me. There must be something troubling you if you can’t sleep.”
As I had done for the past two weeks, I kept my mouth shut.
“It’s Major Felkner?”
“No.”
It’s you.
“Rize, I’m willing to do anything to protect you from him. So please, trust me and tell me.”
Then will you kill the Major?
“The Major hasn’t done anything.”
Try killing an innocent person just because I told you to. Prove your words that way.
To have such a frightening thought—clearly, I was not in my right mind to the point where everyone should worry.
“The Major only makes trouble with words while having me clean. And you’ve heard the rumors about him and Brigitta, haven’t you?”
“So why are you acting like this?”
“…I’m scared.”
“What are you afraid of?”
“Bombings…”
Though everyone is frightened by the bunker, the Eisenthal area hasn’t been bombed yet. There hasn’t even been an air raid alert. Still, Johann didn’t find it strange that I suddenly feared bombings.
“My poor love, even though your memory is gone, it seems the fear remains. There won’t be such things again. This time, I’ll protect you.”
