Chapter 63

“I’m fine.” His words only fueled my frustration. “Fine? How can you be fine after jumping from that height?!” I glanced back at the spire, feeling a wave of vertigo. It was at least four or five stories high, an impossible height for anyone to jump from unharmed. What had he done? How had he survived?

“I’m… o-okay…” My outburst seemed to have subdued him. His invisible ears and tail reappeared, drooping towards the ground. “…Idiot.” Seeing him like that deflated my anger. Tears streamed down my face. “Are you really alright?”

“Yes.” I wiped my tears with my sleeve, examining him again, even more thoroughly this time, running my fingers between his, searching for any hidden injuries. He was perfectly fine.

“How is this possible?”

How could he jump from such a height and remain unharmed? It defied all logic. Sometimes, Cesar’s abilities were so inhuman, so beyond comprehension, that I questioned his very nature.

Cesar sighed, looking at me as if I should already know the answer. His expression silenced me. “What were his guards doing?” As my initial panic subsided, my anger shifted towards the knights. How could they have let him climb to such a dangerous height? Their duty was to protect him, to stay by his side at all times. Clearly, they had been negligent.

I spotted them in the distance, walking towards us, the White Rose Cross Knights, the Empress’s Second Division. Their slow pace made me scowl. They were far too late. As I stepped forward, the captain, a familiar face and the highest-ranking among them, approached. His arm was bandaged from a previous encounter with Cesar.

“Is everything alright?” Alright? I pointed a trembling finger towards the roof. “Did you know Cesar just jumped from up there?” He didn’t answer. I looked at the knights; their faces were impassive. I pressed further. “I asked if you were aware of what just happened.” Their lips curled into smirks, the atmosphere shifting instantly.

The captain stepped forward, looking down at me with arrogance. “As long as he’s unharmed, does it matter? He seems fine.” He gestured dismissively towards Cesar. It was as if Cesar’s near-fatal fall was of no consequence.

“Don’t you have a duty to protect him?” The knights chuckled. Had I said something amusing? I couldn’t understand. Anger boiled inside me. “I’m going to report this.”

The captain sneered. “Know your place.” His unexpected words stunned me. The knights were openly mocking me. “W-what did you say?”

“Who exactly do you intend to report this to?”

I hesitated before answering. “T-To the Empress…”

The captain burst out laughing. Then, abruptly stopping, he said with disdain, “The Empress only cares that things run smoothly here.” He glanced at Cesar. “Unless the First Prince himself reports it… but is that even possible for our… s-s-speech-impaired prince?” He mocked Cesar’s stutter, and the other knights roared with laughter. The sound was loud, but the air felt heavy, oppressive.

They had been stationed here by the Empress, but they clearly felt no obligation to protect me. Fear prickled my skin, but I clenched my jaw, refusing to show it. I stepped in front of Cesar, shielding him with my body.

The captain scoffed, stepping closer, his voice menacing. “Your Highness, you seem terribly naive. Do you know something?”

“W-what?”

“If you were to disappear right now… no one would care. You would simply become the fifth deceased Crown Princess.”
