I Transmigrated as my Bias's Messenger Bird - Chapter 34
After sending Alfie away, I pondered overnight and attempted one thing.
I transformed into a bird in the middle of the night and dropped off a letter in front of the entrance to the first floor of the Mage Tower. The letter contained a distress call that I had painstakingly written. The recipient was of course Rai, and I clearly labeled it ‘To the Tower Lord’ on the envelope.
But when the morning dawned and I showed up for my appointment in front of the Imperial Knights’ investigation room, there was still no word from…That’s right. I was screwed.
‘Am I going to disappear into the morning dew of the prison cell? Damn it, that can’t be it.’
I wanted to make a final attempt. I thought about the odds of my survival. The 1-star Teleportation spell can only take me to places I’ve been to. So, the farthest place would be Ventus’s room in Regia.
‘And then what?’
The Knights know that I’m a foreign exchange student of the elves. So even if I fled to Regia, they could eventually track me down and make a formal complaint to the elves. Will the Monarch protect me? Especially when I’m not really an elf in the first place…?
As I shuddered at the memory of the Monarch releasing me with that benevolent smile, the door to the investigation room opened.
“You’ve arrived.”
Leon held the door open for me, a small smile on his face as he scanned my surroundings.
“Come on in.”
I followed him in with a leisurely stroll, and as I took a seat, Leon said, “I had somewhat expected this.”
While nonchalantly jotting something down, presumably writing the final statement, Leon continued, “But this is a pretty anticlimactic ending for something you seemed so sure of.”
“…That’s true, but it’s also true that I’m not a murderer.”
“And you still keep insisting on that.”
“…I’m telling you, I didn’t kill anyone.”
“I admire your grit.”
Such was Leon’s character. Consistent, gruff, yet awkwardly endearing as a male lead was now consistently heartless, shameless, and a bit of an a**hole as my enemy.
“Alright, it’s time to be honest. There’s some paperwork I need you to fill out.”
“You don’t think it’s even remotely possible that I didn’t do it.”
“Well, the evidence seems to suggest otherwise.”
Right. It’s not Leon’s fault. He doesn’t know me. I’m just a stranger, a foreign exchange student. All the evidence points to the culprit being an elf, and I’m the only known elf around these parts. Leon has reasonable suspicions.
‘Now that it’s come to this, maybe I should just come clean about stealing the fishing rod but deny the murder.’
I don’t know if they’ll believe me, but if they don’t, maybe I can ask the Mage Tower to cast a truth spell on me so I can gain their trust.
“…Alright. I went to the village around sunset yesterday.”
“The village? Is that where you’re going with this? Well, alright. You went to the village.”
“And I stopped by the general store… and then…”
I was about to mention heading straight to the royal warehouse, omitting the story about the deal with Dito, when suddenly there was a creaking sound of the door opening and a voice came through.
“And then I caught her stalking the Crown Prince.”
Confusion flashed across Leon’s face as his gaze shifted inadvertently towards the door. He rose to his feet and greeted Rai with a formal bow.
“I did not expect the Tower Lord to personally come here.”
“I thought you had called me as a witness?”
“That’s…a misunderstanding. How could I summon the Tower Lord?”
Rai, who had appeared out of nowhere, looked at Leon with a brazen expression while I nervously observed their conversation.
Relief and gratitude flooded me knowing that he had read my letter, but I was also embarrassed he would show up so suddenly demanding to see the Knight Commander. These two emotions battled inside me.
“The suspect claimed she was at a tea house with the Tower Lord at the time of the crime, so of course I assumed it was a lie.”
“Suspect?” said Rai confidently. “Are you sure this neurotic elf is the culprit?”
‘Neurotic elf…it’s nice of him to take my side, but I don’t think I deserved that…”
I smiled, hiding my true feelings. Everything Rai said was true.
