I Transmigrated as my Bias's Messenger Bird - Chapter 50
I pretended to look elsewhere while discreetly leaning in to eavesdrop on their conversation.
“Hello, Tower Lord. Um… Do you remember me?”
Rai’s gaze flickered towards Mina briefly before going back to staring straight ahead.
“I remember.”
“When you greeted me so kindly back then, I always wanted to meet you again. I’m truly grateful.”
“It was just business as usual.” Rai responded dryly, causing Mina to shrink back a bit.
‘As expected. He’s still the male lead on hell difficulty. Even with a new event, there’s no progress. No mercy.’
Feeling a bit disappointed with the expected dry flow, I wondered if there would be any additional events. Just then, Edin, who had been listening to their conversation, turned to Rai and spoke.
‘What’s this? An additional event…? A love triangle maybe?’
I eagerly listened in, anticipating a rare love triangle event between Mina, Rai, and Edin.
“Is there any particular reason for the busy Tower Lord to attend the banquet?”
“My busy work ended earlier than expected.”
“It seems like the first time in the past ten years that something ended earlier than expected.”
“Well, there are days like today, and there are days like any other.”
Rai casually chuckled and took a sip of wine, while a slight wrinkle formed between Edin’s eyebrows.
‘…What is this? An event between Rai and Edin without Mina involved? What’s going on…’
Expressing my disappointment at the seemingly pointless bickering between the two, the event came to an end.
Just then, the Empress turned to the Emperor and said, “Your Majesty, I will verify this once. What do you think?”
“Very well. Verify it now.”
“Of course. Look here, bring that elf forward.”
‘What? What’s this about elves? Is she talking about me?’
I looked around as calmly as I could. “Elf…do you mean me?”
But the approaching soldiers didn’t answer and led me to the dais where the Empress and Emperor were.
Instinctively, I looked back at Rai, hoping he would somehow help me. However, Rai was calmly sipping his wine, seemingly indifferent. Well, he’s no help at all!
I stood there in a half-dazed state, as always. It might have appeared nonchalant to others, but to be precise, I was just disassociating. The Empress, who had been closely examining my face, shouted with a feverish voice.
“See if those are pearls on that elf’s dress.”
“Yes!”
As soon as the words were spoken, one of the attendants approached and examined the jewels around my neck.
‘Why do they need to check if they’re pearls? It’s obvious that they’re pearls…’
My mind went blank. I had no idea what was happening. After what felt like an eternity, one of the attendants shouted.
“Your Majesty, Empress! These embellishments…”
“Are they pearls?!”
I didn’t understand what was going on, but it seemed like something had gone wrong. The Empress, in her first encounter with me, seemed suspicious for some reason and ordered to check if the embellishments on my dress were pearls.
‘What’s the problem if they are pearls?’
I tried to act nonchalant but a cold sweat was running down my back.
“Empress! These embellishments… appear to be white pebbles!”
‘…What?’
Not only was I surprised, but wrinkles also appeared on the Empress’s forehead.
“…Are you sure you saw it correctly?”
“I apologize… but even upon closer inspection, they seem to be stones!”
The attendant shouted again, and the Empress personally stood up and approached me. As she drew near, a powerful smell of powder and an unrecognizable fragrance wafted in.
The Empress, her face painted white like flour, leaned close to me and touched the adornments around my neck. I tried to remain as composed as possible, but, in reality, I felt goosebumps around my neck.
Stay calm. Keep your cool now… I kept telling myself as the Empress’s forehead wrinkled.
“…I see. They seem to be stones after all.”
Then, she gave me a disapproving look and returned to her seat. Excuse me… Could you please tell me the reason? But wait… these are really pearls. Why are you saying they’re stones?
Although my inner voice desperately wanted to ask, I kept it inside, realizing that my life depended on it.
“The elf’s discernment is truly outstanding.”
…?
Returning to her seat as if nothing had happened, the Empress smiled benevolently at me. What’s going on? What, was she a master shapeshifter or something?
I shivered again, but with a mechanical expression, I replied, “I simply followed the shopkeeper’s recommendation.”
“…What? …Well, you’re being quite modest. But to use white stones as dress decorations… It’s quite unique. You weren’t trying to make them look like pearls, were you?”
The Empress said with a twinkle in her eye, like she was hoping that was indeed my intention.
