“Commander, may I ask why you’re so keen on keeping an eye on the elf?”

After finishing the class and returning to the Knight Order headquarters, Diana asked Leon as they entered the office.

Lost in thought, Leon raised his head and replied, “Isn’t it strange?”

“Are you referring to…the elf? But with the explanation from the Mage Tower, the elf has completely cleared all charges, hasn’t she?”

“That’s exactly what’s strange.”

“I’m not following.”

Leon approached the window, clenched his fist, and stared into the distance.

“…Has the Tower ever done anything unusual before?”

“Over the past 10 years, you mean? …As far as I know, not really.”

“Yes. The Tower Lord has been extremely reluctant to participate in the events in the past, let alone do anything exceptional—even for the girl from the other world.”

“…That’s true.”

“But things have changed. It’s not like it was before.”

Diana, contemplating Leon’s words, nodded in agreement.

“You’re right. The Tower Lord, someone who used to keep their distance from the Imperial Family, now is the first to admit fault and even promises to compensate them for damages…Did he have some kind of change of heart?”

“I don’t know about a change of heart. But I’m certain that the elf is a factor in all of it.”

There had been exceptional individuals appearing in Alucina before, such as a noble’s heir with an incurable disease or a priest with depleted sacred power. That may be why everyone was only a bit surprised by the appearance of an elf and was otherwise not paying attention.

In the past, those exceptional individuals came and went quietly, not really affecting the greater scheme of things. No one even remembered they were there.

But this time is different. Because the behavior of the Tower Lord at the center of it all has changed.

‘Something is changing. And it has something to do with the elves.’

Leon continued to silently gaze out of the window.

“Miss Keisha.”

Thanks to Leon’s uncomfortable demeanor throughout the lecture, I stumbled my way back, feeling worn out. It was then that I heard a friendly voice call out to me, and I tiredly turned around to see Luke’s smiling face.

“You look very tired. Are you still not feeling well?”

“Hi. I feel fine.”

Come to think of it, Luke probably knows what it means when they say the incident has been resolved, right? Since we bumped into each other, I should ask.

“Hey, I heard that… case was solved. Do you happen to know what happened to it?”

“That… case? Oh, you mean the Hicks case?”

“Yes, that’s it. I just heard it a moment ago. Sir Leon said it’s resolved…”

“The Tower Lord ordered an official letter to be sent to the royal court, stating that the Tower is responsible for the incident.”

“What?! …Then, what about the reported theft?”

“That also seems to have been lost and is related to this incident… or so I heard.”

I saw Hicks smiling in my mind’s eyes. I could feel my vision shaking.

‘What the hell? Does Rai know that I took the rod?’

“Did the Imperial Family really accept that?”

I’m the one who took that fishing rod—why is the Tower taking the blame…

Just as my conscience stabbed me painfully, Luke added, “They asked for accountability.”

“What kind of accountability…?!”

“They requested the dispatch of a 5th-level or higher magician to assist the Imperial Knights’ mission and retrieve a treasure equivalent to the fishing rod. Actually, they said ‘equivalent,’ but they demanded something much rarer.”

“What?! What is that?”

How many times rarer? Where’s the imperial conscience? Oh well, I’m not in a position to worry about anyone’s conscience right now…

“It’s a mermaid’s horn.”

“A mermaid’s… horn?”

I’ve never even heard of it. What on earth is it that they demanded this?

Seeing my expression, Luke smiled and began to explain.

“It’s a legendary treasure said to be hidden somewhere in the deep sea. It’s said that the wielder is able to call any sea creature by blowing the horn. But finding it isn’t the end of the story.”

“…Why?”

“The horn was originally made to be used underwater.”

“…And so?”

“And so, when a horn is out of the water, it senses danger and plays a tune on its own, and that’s when it’s said that there’s something that will appear.”

“What’s that…?”

“The Leviathan,” said Luke as casually as if he were naming his neighbor’s dog.

‘Leviathan? The legendary sea monster? What? This is practically an impossible demand!’

The Emperor is really shameless… I thought at that moment.

Ding–

A translucent window popped up cheerfully.

[Sub-Quest Activated!]

[Retrieve the Mermaid’s Horn and bring it to Tower Lord 0/1]

…Excuse me?

The mission that I thought was excessive for the Tower Lord has become my first sub-quest mission.

Is this for real?
