‘A sub-quest…’

Wasn’t a sub-quest just a boring peanut job to get a little reward? Why was it suddenly asking me to beat a boss? More importantly, wasn’t this supposed to be a dating simulation game?

‘What kind of dating sim involves defeating raid bosses? This game is insane…’

As my jaw dropped to the floor in shock, Luke smiled and just began saying a series of words that made even less sense.

“It’s alright. The Tower Lord said that he’ll retrieve it himself.”

“…Huh?”

Wait a minute. The sub-quest wanted me to retrieve the horn and bring it to the Tower Lord. But what if Rai got it first?

“Oh, by the way, I’ve been dispatched to the Order. If you need anything, feel free to ask.”

“…Huh?!”

‘So the mage being sent as a hostage to the knights is Luke…’

I didn’t know what to say to console him, so I just stood there with my mouth agape.

“Then I’ll be on my way.”

Luke bowed and walked away. I stood there, dumbfounded, long after he was gone.

After a few moments of sitting there with a million thoughts and curses running through my head, I realized that I couldn’t afford to space out like this.

‘Okay. I have to start with gathering information, right?’

I immediately ran to the library and spent the next few hours grabbing every book I could find that might have something to say about mermaid horns.

“This is it…”

Finally, I found a small clue. It was towards the end of the Sea section in the Encyclopedia of Legendary Treasures, in the memoirs of a fisherman claiming to have seen the horn.

「…The path to the mermaid’s horn was under the sea. On a night with a full moon, I saw a small whirlpool rising to the surface as I rowed towards the south port of Alucina. When I went to get a closer look, the boat overturned and I was sucked underwater…

I might have been having near-death hallucinations. But I heard a beautiful song and my body was lifted to the surface. That was the last thing I remembered…」

‘A whirlpool on the surface of the water during the night of a full moon…’

I think the next full moon will be in a week or so, so I have no choice but to wait until then.

‘But even if I get lucky and get the horn, what if the Leviathan actually appears?’

Well, I didn’t know that yet, but I can only prepare as much as I can in a week.

I borrowed a book on the horn and put it in my bag. I planned to check if there’s anything more relevant.

For now, I needed to focus on what I could do, so I’ll have less to worry about when I face Rai later.

***

“Please wait a moment, my Lord. Miss Keisha is here.”

I stood in the doorway, nervous. It was the first session of the magic tutoring I had requested.  I thought it would just end with Rai’s apology, so I had boldly requested it as additional compensation, but I had no idea that the Mage Tower had also covered for my theft case.

I was fiddling with my fingers uncomfortably, feeling deeply indebted to them, when I heard a voice from inside.

“Let her in.”

I stepped through the open door. I had been here as Coo before but never as Keisha. I could see Rai’s back as he stood by the window, tinted orange by the setting sun. Beside him, Coo, now even plumper, bobbed her head when she saw me.

‘Glad to see you doing well, Coo.’

I greeted Coo with a glance. I then turned my attention back to Rai who was now looking at me. After a moment of surprise, I awkwardly greeted him, and he chuckled lightly.

“Are you nervous about our magic tutoring session?”

“Oh? Um…No, not at all. I’m looking forward to it. Very much so.”

As I stammered in response, he leaned back in his chair with his arms crossed, observing me calmly.

“So why are you so awkward? Did you commit a crime or something?”

“A crime? Uh, well…I mean, the crime I did…um…was the fishing rod…but I heard it was resolved…and um…the Tower got in trouble…because of me…”

Rai rose from his seat and picked up one of the crystal orbs on his desk.

“That’s done, so don’t worry about it.”

“I know…but I heard that you’ve been asked to do unreasonable things because of it, and I don’t want the Tower to come to harm because of something I did…”

“It was my decision to settle the fishing rod matter, so it’s not your fault. And the demands we received from the royal court are trivial, so there’s no harm done.”

“Really?”

‘He says it’s trivial when it involves the Leviathan…Geez.’

As I looked at him in surprise, Rai slowly approached and handed me the crystal orb. I stared at it in disbelief.

“Who told you these things?”

“…That’s classified information—I protect my sources.”

Rai took a few steps with his arms crossed, lost in thought, before turning around.

“It must have been Luke.”

“…Uhh.”

I did my best to protect my informant, but Rai must have guessed from gauging my reaction.

He chuckled a little. “I’ll give you credit for trying to protect their identity, even if it was completely ineffective.”

Huffing a small sigh, Rai looked in my direction and crossed his arms.

“Now, shall we start the lesson?”

“…Yes!”

Seemingly satisfied with my response, Rai looked me in the eye.

“Then let’s start with how you were able to cast a 7th-level Judgment.”
