I Want To Die One Day Before You - Chapter 147
The next day, the sun rose as usual.
Prince Tarek’s palace regained its vitality.
“Ah, I slept well.”
In her nightgown, Sarubia stretched her arms wide.
“Thanks for the good sleep, dear bed.”
With a big smile on her face, Sarubia jumped off the bed.
“Up we go.”
The carpet beneath her feet felt as soft as cream. It felt as if her feet were melting into it.
Sarubia twirled around like she was dancing, smiling brightly.
It was morning.
She was happy.
A new day had begun. A new day she could spend with Rufus.
Since Baroness Inferna had appeared at Prince Tarek’s palace, Rufus and Sarubia had been forced to sleep in separate rooms. The reason the baroness had given was simple.
‘You two aren’t officially engaged yet. Be mindful of appearances.’
Appearances? Hearing that, Sarubia had secretly chuckled to herself. Rufus was never one to care about what others thought. He didn’t care how others viewed him, and that was one of the things Sarubia liked about him. She admired how he wasn’t easily swayed by trivial and petty rules.
After washing her face with cold water, Sarubia dressed herself without the help of the maids.
Perhaps it was because she had been a maid herself not long ago, but she felt very uncomfortable being attended to by maids.
As she was preparing to go down to the dining room alone, someone knocked on the door.
“Who is it?”
Sarubia opened the door slightly and peeked outside.
It was a maid.
“One of the soldiers who was on guard last night has something to report to you, Saintess.”
Sarubia tilted her head in curiosity. Why would a soldier want to see her?
Intrigued, Sarubia allowed the soldier to enter her room.
“What is it?”
Sarubia asked with a clear smile.
The soldier hesitated for a moment, then cautiously began to speak.
“Last night, a man who introduced himself as Your Eminence’s older brother came to ask for your audience.”
For a moment, Sarubia’s bright face hardened like wax dropped in cold water.
“My… brother?”
“Yes… He introduced himself as your brother…”
The soldier carefully watched Sarubia’s expression.
“……”
Brother. It was a word she hadn’t heard in a very long time. It was also a word she never wanted to hear again.
“He asked me to give this to you.”
The soldier handed Sarubia something. It was a bouquet of paper flowers.
“……”
Sarubia stared blankly at the paper bouquet. The pale yellow flowers, folded clumsily, had petals spread wide like a child’s arms reaching for the sky. To most people, it would look like an ordinary roadside flower. But Sarubia recognized the flower’s name immediately.
“Primrose…”
“Pardon?”
“Oh… It’s nothing!”
Sarubia hastily waved her hands.
“Thank you for receiving this bouquet so late at night! And thank you for kindly bringing it to me this morning!”
Placing the paper bouquet on the desk, Sarubia smiled broadly, as if her face had never hardened.
The soldier was taken aback by her sudden change in expression, but as a mere soldier, he couldn’t ask why she reacted that way.
“Then… please rest well.”
Leaving behind such an irresponsible encouragement, the soldier quietly left the room.
“……”
After confirming that the soldier had left, Sarubia sat down on the desk chair.
An unpleasant sensation clouded her head. She could feel cold sweat running down her back.
“……”
Sarubia quietly stared at the paper bouquet on the desk. The light golden paper flowers stood there calmly. Her heart pounded irregularly as she looked at them.
How much time had passed?
After staring at the paper bouquet for a long time, Sarubia finally raised her hands.
She took out each paper flower one by one. Then she tore and unfolded them.
The white background of the paper was revealed. It was blank. Without hesitation, Sarubia pushed it aside and picked up the next paper flower.
Small pieces of paper fell to the floor. But Sarubia didn’t care.
One by one, the half-torn paper flowers piled up on the desk.
And then.
Sarubia’s fingers suddenly stopped as if they were broken.
Inside one of the paper flowers, there was a short message written.
—Roned
Upon reading the note, Sarubia stood up abruptly. She swept the paper flowers into the fireplace.
Next, there was a flicking sound as she struck a match, creating a spark. The bright red flame arced and fell onto the paper flowers.
It all happened in an instant. Flames rose inside the fireplace. The blazing fire licked its red tongue and consumed all traces.
Sarubia looked down at the entire process dispassionately.
“Saintess, what’s that burning smell in the room…?”
A maid, smelling the smoke, hurried into the room. Her gaze was drawn to the blackened ashes in the fireplace.
The pieces were so finely crumbled that it was impossible to tell what had been burned.
What had happened?
“Oh, perfect timing.”
Seeing the maid, a lively smile appeared on Sarubia’s face.
“Could you bring me a dagger?”
“A… A dagger?”
The maid was taken aback by Sarubia’s sudden request. But Sarubia’s smile did not waver.
“Yes. Preferably a small one, easy to carry around.”
The smile only grew more distinct.
“I’ll prepare it right away… but if I may ask, what do you need a dagger for?”
“Oh, it’s nothing much.”
With a gentle laugh, Sarubia lightly brushed back her pale ivory hair.
“I just have something I need to cut.”
