I Want To Die One Day Before You - Chapter 188
With her last ounce of strength, Sarubia pulled out the dagger hidden beneath her dress. In one swift motion, she slashed at Prince Camus’s hand, which was tightly gripping her throat.
“Aaagh!”
Caught off guard by Sarubia’s unexpected attack, Prince Camus instinctively released his grip.
“Haa… haa…!”
Gasping for air, Sarubia collapsed to the ground. Her lungs seized the chance to fill with air, pushing through her previously blocked windpipe. Her head spun, and her vision blurred.
No, I have to get up. I need to. I have to stand up… and stop Prince Camus…
“You… you cursed wretch!”
Blood dripped from the wound Sarubia had inflicted on Camus. He wasn’t as troubled by the pain as he was by the humiliation of being wounded by a mere maid without magic.
Trembling, Sarubia gripped the dagger once again, biting down hard. She felt as though she could faint at any moment, but she forced herself to remain conscious.
I have to get up.
Gathering all her strength, she lunged at Prince Camus, aiming the dagger at him. But the blade never reached its target.
“How dare you!”
Camus unleashed his magic, slamming into Sarubia with immense force. The impact left deep wounds on her body.
Thud. A stream of blood splattered across the ground, and a cry of pain escaped Sarubia’s lips.
Royal magic was overwhelmingly powerful. For Sarubia, born a commoner with little magic, Camus’s strike was devastating.
“You deranged fool! How dare you raise a blade against me!”
With his magic, Camus healed his wound and stomped down on Sarubia’s hand.
The pain was unbearable, so intense she couldn’t even scream.
It felt like her entire body was being torn apart, a level of agony she couldn’t endure.
“Now I see.”
Camus sneered, pressing his foot harder against her hand.
“You were conspiring with Tarek to kill me all along.”
Sarubia’s blood-soaked hand trembled violently.
“You knew Tarek had poisoned the sword. That’s why you dared to speak of my death so freely.”
“No…”
Through ragged breaths and unbearable pain, Sarubia managed to squeeze out a response.
“Prince Camus… you will die tonight.”
The red engagement ring on Sarubia’s finger, soaked in blood, glimmered faintly.
“Because you, Prince Camus… will be killed by me tonight.”
“You… still have the nerve to speak!”
Camus laughed bitterly.
“I feared you for no reason. You’re just a fraud pretending to be a saintess. Fine, before you can kill me, I’ll end your life right now.”
He began gathering magic into his hand.
Struggling to breathe through the agony, Sarubia looked up at Prince Camus. The energy he was amassing radiated with deadly intent.
The magical force was enormous, so much so that even Sarubia, who had never experienced magic this close, could feel it.
If she got caught up in that blast, she would certainly die. With no resistance to magic, there was no way to defend herself. Her body would shatter into pieces, like glass, and she would die instantly.
And yet.
She wasn’t afraid.
Even with death looming so close, she felt no fear.
Because.
I will stand by you, Rufus, by your side… until you draw your very last breath.
She thought of the man she loved and closed her eyes. A smile appeared on her blood-stained lips.
It was then that the red ring on Sarubia’s finger flashed brilliantly.
“Aagh!”
Blinded by the sudden burst of light, Prince Camus staggered backward.
What…? Sarubia, startled, quickly opened her eyes and looked down at the ring.
The red light emanating from the mana stone in the engagement ring Rufus had given her enveloped the area where she lay. The ground beneath her began to tremble violently, as if some giant creature had awakened beneath the earth.
“What… what is happening?!”
Camus, utterly confused, shouted in panic. But Sarubia was just as bewildered.
Is… is this an earthquake?
That theory was quickly proven wrong.
Crack!
The ground split open like torn paper, and from the gaping fissure, something red and writhing began to emerge. It surged upward like an endless, flowing river.
“…Wow.”
Sarubia, forgetting her pain for a moment, gasped in awe.
What appeared before her was a swarm of hundreds of toad-like monsters.
“Witch! It’s the Witch!”
One of the toad creatures cried out upon seeing Sarubia.
“The Witch is hurt!”
“Protect the Witch! Protect her!”
The entire forest erupted into a cacophony of croaking sounds as the toads filled the area.
Prince Camus’s mouth hung open in disbelief. Where had all these monsters come from?
“Witch! Are you alright?”
Through the sea of croaks, a gravelly voice rang out. One of the large toads rolled toward Sarubia, almost like a boulder.
Sarubia stood frozen, completely stunned by what was happening.
