I Want To Die One Day Before You - Chapter 27
“Um, I don’t have a more appropriate way to put it. I don’t really know, but if you try to interfere with someone else’s death, I have a feeling that something bad might happen.”
With those words, Sarubia thought of Baroness Inferna, Rufus’s grandmother, who she had glimpsed using her unique magic.
A raging fire. A frenzied crowd. And, a shining, azure sword.
At the center of it all, Baroness Inferna collapsed.
Baroness Inferna’s final moments were excruciatingly painful, pitiable, and, above all, miserable.
If she were to try to prevent Baroness Inferna’s death, what might occur?
Sarubia imagined interfering with the foreseen death of the baroness. Rushing to the spot where she would fall, pushing her out of harm’s way…
‘Ugh!’
At that moment, Sarubia let out a silent scream.
It felt like a poisoned arrow was piercing her heart. Her arms and legs trembled. An uncomfortable sensation crawled up her spine.
“Sarubia? What’s wrong?”
A startled Rufus examined Sarubia’s complexion.
“It’s, it’s nothing. I just suddenly felt cold.”
Sarubia huddled into his embrace, and she looked up.
“Oh, right! I’ll tell you about your own death! Aren’t you curious?”
Seeing Rufus’s concern, Sarubia quickly changed the subject.
My own death?
Rufus fell silent for a moment.
“I’m not particularly interested in knowing that.”
“Why? It’s not such a bad death.”
Sarubia laughed brightly and patted Rufus on the shoulder.
“You’re going to live for a very long time. But strangely, you won’t look very old. And you’ll die wearing really strange clothes. The end!”
“Strange clothes…?”
“Yes, in your death that I saw, you were wearing extremely unusual attire.”
Sarubia nodded her head.
“From head to toe, it was all black, and there were some strange protruding decorations… Anyway, it was an eccentric outfit.”
“What on earth am I doing in the future?”
“Don’t be too disheartened. Maybe it’s just a fashion trend that will become popular later.”
Sarubia recalled Rufus’s last moments that she had seen three years ago.
She had used her unique magic to glimpse the deaths of many people over the years. However, Rufus’s death was the most bizarre among those she had seen.
She had mulled over his final moments several times but still couldn’t understand it. Where and why did Rufus die in such a manner?
“Sarubia.”
Rufus turned his body towards Sarubia.
“I’m sorry for asking so many questions, but one last thing.”
Rufus took a deep breath.
“When I die, what are you doing, and where are you?”
In response, Sarubia smiled mischievously.
“Rufus, do you know why I asked you for a kiss three years ago?”
“You said it’s because my face is to your liking.”
“That’s part of it… but you never really countered the fact that you’re handsome.”
Sarubia let out a light sigh.
“That’s right. You, unnecessarily handsome. But there was a more important reason.”
Saying that, Sarubia continued.
“When you die, you will be holding my hand.”
With those words, she smiled sweetly.
It took a moment for him to grasp the meaning. In the death she had glimpsed for Rufus, the future Rufus was holding Sarubia’s hand and looking at her until the moment that he’d take his final breath.
“So, I realized it then. That you are the man who will live with me for the rest of our lives.”
“Ah…”
Yes. That’s what it was.
Rufus now understood why Sarubia had unexpectedly requested a kiss that day. She already knew.
‘You are the one destined to be with me.’
The man named Rufus and the woman named Sarubia were meant to be together until death, and she had already known that.
“If I was holding your hand when I died… it seems like I might die before you.”
“Perhaps.”
“I’m glad.”
Rufus whispered quietly.
“I’m glad that I will die before you.”
“Why?”
Because living without you would be hell.
Having swallowed those words, Rufus pulled Sarubia into his arms.
The lamp in the room went out. Gradually, the room was swallowed by the darkness.
If I die
I’ll become a single drop of rain
And wash away your tears.
Sarubia’s lullaby softly filled the room.
