I Want To Die One Day Before You - Chapter 32
* * *
Despite the efforts of servants and knights to pour water and do their best, the fire showed no signs of diminishing.
People screaming to avoid the flames, those who fell and were trampled, and those already silent and lifeless – it was chaos everywhere.
Rufus tightly held Baroness Inferna. Having inhaled a lot of smoke while going down the path where the fire wasn’t spreading, Baroness Inferna was not in good condition.
Was this going to be the cause of his grandmother’s death?
“Brother, what do we do now?”
Trembling visibly, Edel tightly clung to Sarubia.
“What else.”
Exhaling bitter smoke, Rufus gritted his teeth.
“We have to survive.”
While saying this, Rufus held Baroness Inferna even tighter.
That’s when it happened.
“Ugh, ahh!”
“Save us!”
Sharp screams from people gathered to escape the flames reached their ears.
Could it be that the fire has spread this far?
Raising his head abruptly, Rufus was met with an unexpected scene.
Armed opponents.
All of them had their faces covered with black cloth, making it impossible to identify them. From their appearance, they didn’t seem to be royal knights. As they swung their swords, people couldn’t even scream properly before falling. Blood splattered in the places where they stood.
Unsheathed, fresh red blood stained the ground.
What is this?
Initially, Rufus couldn’t comprehend the scene he was witnessing.
People were killing each other.
It was an unimaginable sight. He had seen demons killing people many times… but people killing people? What kind of hell was this?
“There, that man!”
Someone shouted towards the stupefied Rufus. The opponents, with their faces covered, turned their heads towards Rufus as if they had a prearranged agreement. The blades of their swords were sharply directed at Rufus.
“Kill the traitor Rufus!”
They all rushed towards Rufus in unison.
His body reacted faster than his mind. In the moment when the thugs’ attack came crashing down, Rufus hid his grandmother behind him and drew his sword from his waist.
Clang!
The sharp sound of swords clashing pierced his eardrums. The tingling vibrations transmitted from the swords began to gnaw at Rufus’s arm. An uncomfortable sensation, almost painful. Simultaneously, a feeling familiar to his body, worn out from years of battle, resurfaced in an instant.
Rufus kicked away the thug blocking his path.
“Kuugh!”
Caught off guard, the thug lost balance and fell. Before the bewildered thug could regain a fighting stance, Rufus kicked him away again.
Thunk.
Rufus thrust his sword towards the thug’s heart.
A pained groan escaped from the thug’s mouth. Rufus twisted the sword while looking down at the injured thug. Blood poured out like a river from the thug’s fatally wounded body. Unable to endure the excruciating pain, the thug convulsed, making choking sounds. Rufus looked down at the suffering thug and raised his sword.
Then, he swung the sword again.
The thug’s head flew off.
The man’s head rolled far away with a dull, echoing sound. The eyes, unable to see, were still glaring at Rufus.
All of this happened in just a few seconds.
“D, Damn it!”
“Cruel bastard!”
Witnessing the gruesome fate of their comrade, the other thugs hesitated.
“…”
Rufus wordlessly stared at the group of thugs that appeared in front of him.
They had just been indiscriminately killing people moments ago. Witnessing this had left Rufus perplexed. Why were humans killing each other?
And then it hit him.
I must have seen it wrong.
Humans killing humans, it’s an impossible scenario.
They are not people. They are demons, damn demons assuming the appearance of humans and killing innocent people.
Yes, those are demon bastards.
So, they all need to die.
“Rufus, you bastard! Did you think you could survive coveting the throne?”
The apparent leader of the thugs, a man with a mask covering his face, shouted angrily, glaring at Rufus.
“Don’t even think about running away! Your grave is right here!”
Baroness Inferna, standing behind Rufus, furrowed her brow.
“Rufus, did you cause an incident?”
“I have no memory of it.”
“Really? It seems like they have misunderstood something.”
Baroness Inferna walked forward and picked up the fallen thug’s sword. Seeing this, Rufus’s heart sank.
“Don’t bother stepping forward.”
“Oho, look at how this little brat is talking to his grandmother. Terrible.”
Holding the sword, the baroness looked at Rufus.
“I am still the head of the noble house of Inferna. The household head fights for the sake of the family.”
