I Want To Die One Day Before You - Chapter 41
“…….”
Sarubia stood still, looking at the man clinging to her.
Strange.
Such a strange man.
There was nothing else to say but that.
Strange, strange, and even more strange.
But somehow, it didn’t feel wrong.
“What happened? Why are you crying so sorrowfully?”
Sarubia sighed lightly and stroked the man’s back.
“Don’t cry. Your handsome face is all scrunched up.”
She didn’t understand why she was comforting and stroking a stranger. Somehow, the moment she touched him, her stomach fluttered. It felt like something was blooming brightly above her head.
So, she just wished.
She wished that he wouldn’t be sad anymore.
And so, she comforted the man for a long while.
“Sarubia.”
The man, his face no longer showing any sign of tears, called her name. Unfamiliar with the tone, Sarubia flinched for a moment, then slowly lifted her head.
“Do you have something to say to me?”
“I am soon leaving for the battlefield.”
“Ah, I see.”
Sarubia vaguely knew about it. Recently, young nobles seen leaving after visiting His Majesty the King were invariably being drafted into the demon subjugation army. This nobleman must be one of them.
Sarubia thought that the reason for the man’s tears must surely be related to this. After all, being sent to the battlefield was akin to a death sentence for these young, healthy men with bright futures ahead.
He needed comfort.
With that light thought, Sarubia decided to take a brief glimpse into the man’s death.
‘……Hmm?’
Using her unique saintly magic to see the man’s death, Sarubia paused.
It was an odd death.
This man standing before her was destined to face the most incomprehensible death she had ever seen.
The man, clad from head to toe in pitch-black attire.
He was fated to die a very, very late death. His death lay so far in the future that the current Sarubia couldn’t even begin to comprehend it. Yet, in that vision, he did not appear much older than he was now.
And there was something even more peculiar than that.
The dying man was holding someone’s hand. At the end of his gaze, her own reflection appeared.
In his final moments, the man was looking at Sarubia.
‘What?’
Sarubia’s heart sank.
Why was this man holding her hand as he died?
Sarubia retracted her magical ability and hastily looked at the man standing before her.
He was like a tree. His dark navy hair framed a calm face. He seemed so stoic that even a hard punch might not elicit a sound of pain from him. Cold and stern was his appearance. Yet, for some reason, her heart fluttered upon looking at him. Unknowingly, her face flushed with heat.
That’s when Sarubia realized.
If she was present at the man’s dying moment, it could only mean one thing.
This man.
You’re mine.
“Sarubia.”
“Y, yes.”
Sarubia responded, lifting her head like a startled chick.
“I will kill Demon King Audixus.”
At these words, her heart stung as if pricked by a needle.
He’s going to kill the Demon King?
Could this man also have Princess Sordid in his heart? Is he determined to kill the Demon King and make the princess his wife?
Her head suddenly spun as if she had drunk sour wine.
“That would be tough. Killing the Demon King is no easy task. Good luck!”
Sarubia forced a smile and patted the man’s shoulder. Then he said something strange.
“So, when I return after killing the Demon King, will you marry me?”
“…What?”
Sarubia doubted her ears.
Marry, did he say? To someone she had met less than ten minutes ago?
Confused, Sarubia replied.
“Excuse me, my lord! I am not a princess! You should marry the princess!”
“I’m Rufus.”
“Ru-Rufus?”
“My name is Rufus.”
The man, Rufus, firmly grasped Sarubia’s hand that was patting his shoulder and gently kissed the back of her hand.
A soft sensation touched Sarubia’s skin. It was a feeling she had never experienced before. Her heart dropped.
“You…!”
“Let’s talk about our wedding later.”
Rufus gently released Sarubia’s hand. She stared at him blankly.
“Do you… like me?”
“Yes.”
“Why on earth?”
“Why? Because there’s no reason not to.”
Rufus responded matter-of-factly and picked up the broom she had dropped.
“I’ll be back.”
Rufus handed the broom back to Sarubia and bid her farewell.
