I Want To Die One Day Before You - Chapter 75
Their point was valid.
The demons were strong. It was implausible to fight them without any casualties among the humans. Moreover, if they captured the Demon King without any loss of forces, it would certainly arouse suspicion.
‘We will fight the humans in earnest. If we die in the process, we will accept our deaths. The humans should also engage in battle in this way.”
‘…….’
Rufus clenched his fists in response to the demons’ firm declaration.
***
In fact, Rufus had anticipated such a situation from the moment he allied with Demon King Audixus. However, when he actually faced the prospect of people dying, his heart began to waver.
Huu.
He took another deep breath.
“You are not ruined.”
The voice he heard in the dream was still vivid in his mind.
I am not ruined. Because that’s what she said.
That’s how it should be.
I.
The current me.
I did not make the wrong choice.
Rufus’s hand reached for his sheath. Then, with the sound of sharp metal friction, his silver sword soared into the dark void.
That was the signal.
Suddenly, the ground where the troops were stationed began to rumble. It was as if a giant fish was churning beneath the ground.
“Wh, what?”
Startled soldiers hastily emerged from their tents. What greeted them were demons brandishing their bright red claws.
“Aaaack!”
“Demons!”
Cries of terror erupted.
It had begun.
Rufus’s heart raced wildly.
Ah.
Now, it truly was.
It’s truly irreversible.
Boom, boom!
The patrol soldiers who observed the enemy’s surprise attack urgently beat drums to send out an emergency signal. The entire camp was thrown into chaos.
Demons roared as they infiltrated the camp, and tragic screams spread throughout the area. Terrified soldiers quickly grabbed their weapons in a bid to survive.
“Attack! Attack!”
Following their lieutenants’ orders, the soldiers, not yet accustomed to formation, charged at the demons.
Most of them collapsed.
Most soldiers faced demons for the first time. Overwhelmed by fear, they could barely hold their swords. Humans sliced by demon claws fell like straw.
Once a peaceful unit, the camp transformed into a chaotic battlefield as humans and demons tangled. Soldiers, bleeding, fell among the tents stormed by demons.
“Don’t run! Push forward!”
Lieutenants urged their soldiers.
The demons were outnumbered. They were less than half of the human troops. Yet, the humans were overwhelmingly defeated.
“Lieutenant! What should we do now?”
Rufus’s men desperately sought him out, their faces drained of color.
“Arms.”
Rufus replied calmly.
“A-Arms, sir?”
“Target the demons’ arms. That’s how you’ll survive.”
With those words, Rufus gripped his sword.
A demon, drenched in blood, strode toward Rufus.
Every step it took, blood dripped down.
“Ugh…”
Seeing the monstrous creature, the soldiers trembled.
“Everyone, defensive stance.”
Rufus raised his sword.
Only one demon against about twenty of Rufus’s men. Despite the numerical advantage, none dared to move rashly.
Rufus called out to the youngest and weakest of his squad.
“Nad.”
“Yes, Lieutenant!”
Squad member Nad responded, lifting his head.
“We’ll take this one down together.”
“M-Me, sir? Are you serious?”
Nad’s face turned pale.
Chiding Nad for questioning an order, Rufus clicked his tongue.
In his past life, Nad died in his first battle, right before Rufus’s eyes.
This time, Rufus hoped he would survive.
“Charge.”
Rufus commanded Nad.
The demon fixed its gaze on Rufus, who returned the stare fiercely.
“Remember, aim for the arms.”
Recalling the special training, Rufus charged at the demon, followed by the trembling Nad. The demon lunged with sharp claws as if waiting.
Rufus sidestepped the demon’s strike.
His sword, like a flash of lightning, aimed for the demon’s arm.
