Soon after, the knights emerged from the maids’ quarters with a stream of precious jewels. Only after inspecting them did Cain finally break his long-held silence and stand up.
By this point, the maids and Teschen had already knelt on the ground, tears streaming down their faces as they begged for forgiveness for their sins. But no amount of tears could wash away their guilt.
Cain showed not a shred of mercy. He ordered them all to be taken away together, and Teschen’s wails echoed throughout the room for some time even after they were dragged outside.
“I can’t believe the state the Marquis’s estate has fallen into.”
In that brief moment, fatigue etched itself deeply onto Cain’s face. This level of shock should not have affected him so much. Liana quickly organized her next words in her mind.
In truth, Agatha had only instructed her to go this far.
Agatha’s command to Liana had simply been to rid the estate of the rotten maids, nothing more. But that instruction had long since slipped from Liana’s mind.
That was nowhere near sufficient. The fact that the head maid and the other attendants had committed such audacious acts was entirely due to her husband, Cain Vernat, having disrespected his wife.
Liana thought to herself.

Agatha pulled back the curtains covering the window. The surrounding darkness had faded, replaced by daylight.
The sun had risen, so Cain must have seen the documents she left behind by now.
He was always an early riser, waking just before dawn and heading straight to the study, a diligent knight and a loyal servant of the Emperor.
“We have arrived. Please disembark.”
The coachman opened the door for her. Afraid he might catch a glimpse of her face, Agatha quickly drew her veil tighter to cover her lips.
Once she stepped down, the carriage immediately departed, fulfilling its original duty.
After confirming the carriage had completely vanished, Agatha surveyed her surroundings. It was still early, and not many people were at the station.
There were various ways to leave the capital, and taking a rental carriage was the most convenient and safest option. However, Agatha chose to take the train.
Coming alone to a station bustling with hundreds of people each day, especially with her face covered by a veil, was practically a very risky move.
But she calculated that choosing the more dangerous option would allow her to evade Cain’s predictions.
He had been a knight, traversing battlefields since he was fifteen, and was known as a master strategist.
It was impossible to escape his reach through ordinary means.
She never imagined he would come rushing after her the moment he saw the divorce papers.
Still, given the slight chance that he might, it wouldn’t hurt to be cautious.
“Excuse me, which train departs the earliest?”
Agatha asked the official in charge of the station.
“The earliest train, you say…?”
Amidst the bustling activity, Agatha looked around. The surroundings were completely brightened, and the once-quiet station was suddenly filled with energy.
This newfound liveliness meant an influx of people had arrived unexpectedly.
There shouldn’t be any rush at this time. Agatha slightly lifted her hat.
Following her gaze, the official also looked up to scan the now chaotic area. Then, with an expression of realization, he nodded.
“What’s going on?”
“I heard earlier this morning that a distinguished guest would be visiting the station, and it seems that person has arrived.”
“A distinguished guest? Who…”
Agatha couldn’t finish her sentence. Armed knights were marching in formation outside the station’s fence.
Even at a glance, their movements were anything but ordinary. The knights were clad in iron armor, their shoulders adorned with golden epaulets—the emblem of the imperial knight order.
‘Once I slip out quietly from the Marquis’s estate, I’ll take the train and leave the capital.’
Agatha’s first plan had succeeded only halfway.
“…This is quite troublesome.”
She muttered as she entered, glancing at the knights quickly surrounding the station.
Every plan comes with variables. Therefore, a perfect plan does not exist.
At least, that was true for the plans Agatha had formulated thus far.
It was a lesson learned from the many attempts and failures she had gone through to escape Stella’s grasp.
‘Every plan has its variables.’
The probability of being discovered by the Marquis’s attendants before boarding the carriage, the chance of being recognized by the driver before reaching Teion Street, and even the likelihood of being unable to board the train after arriving at the station.
Agatha had anticipated every variable and devised corresponding countermeasures. Of course, she couldn’t have predicted exactly why she might be unable to board the train.
‘Who would have thought that the imperial knight order would occupy the station from the early hours?’
The fact that the imperial knight order had taken over the station meant that someone from the imperial family was planning to use the train.
The Emperor and his direct family would never travel by train. Therefore, the imperial family member present must be one of the collateral relatives. Agatha carefully observed the movements of the knights.
They occupied not just the front car but also the third car.
That left only the rear car and the cargo car behind it. However, she couldn’t board the train alongside the imperials.
While it might be possible to claim her status as the Marchioness, doing so would defeat the purpose of using the train in the first place.
