Liana’s loyalty to Agatha was not something that could be broken by physical pain. The principle she held most dearly in life was to sacrifice everything for Agatha’s well-being and happiness.
Because of this, she was confident she wouldn’t be swayed by Cain’s threats.
However, after learning the full story, Cain’s actions took an unexpected turn, and Liana felt a brief moment of confusion as she witnessed his behavior, which was unlike anything she had anticipated.
Having been close to both Agatha and Cain, Liana had assumed that Cain would focus on managing the situation within the mansion rather than searching for his wife.
But she was wrong. Cain issued orders to capture and imprison all those involved and then left the mansion without a second glance.
It seemed that finding Agatha was his only priority. Watching him desperately try to find even the slightest clue from her made Liana feel an indescribable mix of emotions.
To be more precise, it was confusion.
The Cain Vernat she knew was a man of logic, driven by reason rather than emotions, and he had never shown any personal affection toward his wife.
[Where has Agatha gone? Please, tell me.]
Please? Was that something Cain Vernat, the Ice Knight, would ever say?
The face of the man saying those words looked as if he was a common man, crushed by the loss of someone dear. It didn’t make sense. It was utterly strange.
Her initial thought had been, ‘You should have treated her well when you had the chance’. She had even been angry, thinking, ‘How could someone who never even properly looked at his wife act like this?’
But Cain’s desperate plea, the way he said please, struck her. Though his expression remained as cold as ever, there was a subtle trembling in his voice. A breath of urgency that made Liana hesitate for a moment.
She had never seen Cain Vernat—usually so unshakable—show such signs of distress.
It seemed, contrary to Agatha’s expectations, that Cain truly cared for his wife.
‘This is unexpected.’
Despite Cain’s plea, Liana sat quietly with her lips tightly sealed. What good would showing surprise and urgency do now? If that was the case, he shouldn’t have had an affair in the first place.
Liana pouted her lips.
How shocked would he be to hear that his wife had gone after his beloved mistress?
For a moment, Liana imagined Cain’s face when he learned of Agatha’s whereabouts.
Perhaps he would be horrified, ashamed of his ugly side being revealed, or maybe, in his usual manner, he would become angry, turning the blame back on others.
Neither of the outcomes seemed pleasant.
Still, it was a relief that Cain didn’t show any signs of joy at the disappearance of his troublesome wife, which was the worst-case scenario Liana had imagined. If he had done so, Liana had already planned to leave the Marquis’s residence and spread the scandal of Cain Vernat throughout the capital.
How dare he treat our Miss this way! After all, if they traced it back, Cain Vernat had gained his surname and status because of Duke Kristin, Agatha’s father, who had accepted him into his knightly order and raised him.
Cain owed everything to Kristin and yet betrayed him. To wound someone who had shown him such favor was unforgivable. No matter how many nobles lived lives of debauchery and openly kept mistresses, Cain’s affair was a crime that could not be overlooked.
“Madam only said she wanted to leave this place and go far away.”
Though Cain angered her, Liana found some comfort in the fact that he seemed genuinely surprised by his wife’s disappearance. Because of that, she decided to tell him half the truth.
She couldn’t reveal everything. She hoped Cain would go through enough frustration and emotional turmoil before finally meeting Agatha and apologizing. So, she kept quiet about the fact that Agatha had traveled by train. Instead, she told him that Agatha had left in a carriage heading south.
After all, Agatha’s final destination was the south, so it wasn’t entirely a lie. Liana rationalized this to herself, trying to push away the guilt.
‘South. She went south.’
At Liana’s response, Cain murmured in a daze, seemingly thinking about who might be in the south. Then, without hesitation, he left the room. He didn’t have time to wait for a carriage to be brought. He took the horse himself and set off.
Having spent most of his life on battlefields, riding alone was far faster for him than traveling by carriage.
Good luck with your journey, Your Grace.
Liana pouted her lips once more.

After visiting again in two years, Arta was much changed. After several days of travel, Agatha’s heart pounded heavily as she finally arrived.
It was time to verify whether the orphanage in Arta, promised by Cain under the name of Kristin, truly existed.
Though not far from the capital, Arta was located near the border and was still largely undeveloped. Compared to the capital, Arta was almost a wilderness. And with Cain’s knights gone, it was now desolate and abandoned.
“Your Grace, please hide yourself for a moment.”
Rubens, who had been directing the hunters to carry the supplies, approached and blocked Agatha’s path.
