After Izelle left, Agatha finished preparing for her outing. The weather had cleared up after a few cloudy days, and thanks to Liana’s enthusiastic compliments about the exceptionally beautiful weather for an outing, Agatha felt a bit excited too.
“The preparations for the outing are complete. The carriage is waiting out front.”
“Ethan.”
It was her first outing since taking refuge at the Marquis’ residence. Following Cain’s advice to focus on her recovery, a month had passed without her realizing it. She had received a draft of a dress from Madam de Borre, who had taken her measurements, and a message had come asking her to stop by for fittings and confirmation. They could have summoned her to the Marquis’ residence, but Agatha chose to visit.
Teyon Square, the heart and busiest district of the capital Leden, had always been a place she had wanted to visit at least once. Although she had passed by it a few times when running errands for Stella or traveling with her, she had never explored it on her own. Therefore, taking her time to explore was a completely new experience for her.
Most noble young ladies accompanied their mothers or attended parties to broaden their horizons at the age of fourteen or fifteen. Agatha had never experienced either, so she cherished the freedom she had gained upon coming of age and eagerly indulged in doing what she wanted and going where she desired.
“In the future, I will accompany Madam on all your outings.”
She looked up at a large knight who saluted her courteously. Ethan Hawk. He was slightly taller than Cain but seemed quite similar. Agatha remembered him from the time when he was a member of the Kristin Order and used to accompany Cain.
“Thank you, Ethan.”
“Please don’t mention it. It’s my duty.”
Ethan promised Agatha, the new Marchioness and the former Lady Kristin, her utmost safety,
<Stay by Agatha’s side without a moment’s separation. Focus all your attention on guarding her.>
Last night, Cain had issued a stern command to guard Agatha with utmost diligence, declaring that he would tolerate no mistakes during her protection duties. Ethan couldn’t help but suppress a chuckle as he remembered Cain’s formidable determination.
They made quite the nice-looking pair. Although he had thought that nine years had severed their shallow connection, somehow, after Cain rose to power with the Emperor’s support, he began to involve himself in matters related to Kristin.
Eventually, he swiftly arranged a marriage to Lady Kristin and, in doing so, rightfully became the owner of Kristin Duchy.
Although the wedding had not yet taken place, he had not officially become the head of the family. But they had announced their engagement at the Princess’ birthday celebration, and they had received approval from the Emperor for their marriage. So, whether they held a ceremony or not was not a pressing matter.
As he watched Agatha walking toward the carriage, Ethan couldn’t help but think that Cain had taken quite a liking to the lady. He pondered the fact that Cain, who had once been a lowly squire, had no status to even approach a lady like her.
He never thought there would be any connection between them back in those days, but now it seemed clear that Cain had held feelings for the lady since his squire days.
Although it was not spoken out loud, what kind of man would negotiate with the Emperor to marry a woman he had no affection for? Moreover, Cain was now in a state of conflict with Calvino County.
Even if there were good reasons for it, openly confronting another noble house was not typical behavior for nobles. Yet, Cain seemed determined to tear the County apart.
<“Before I grab you by the collar and toss you aside, step back.”>
The moment when Cain confronted Countess Calvino in front of everyone, declaring that he would protect Lady Kristin, was still dizzying to think about. Even though his fiance might have been in danger, it was still a rather audacious move to challenge the Countess, who had a close relationship with the Empress.
The Countess had attempted to report Cain, accusing him of verbally abusing her and kidnapping her niece. However, Cain didn’t seem to care much.
The accusation of verbal abuse was only the Countess’ claim, without any other witnesses or evidence. Moreover, Agatha, her niece, wasn’t kidnapped. She was brought for the wedding, so Cain boldly asserted that he had done nothing wrong. The Countess had gone to great lengths to accuse him and lost in the process..
Ethan let out a quiet sigh.
“I want to stop by the dressing room and have a cup of tea. The weather is nice, after all.”
“Yes, I will make sure to guide you.”
Before leaving the mansion, Izelle personally wrote down the name and address of the most popular tea salon among the noble ladies these days.
Perhaps because she had heard stories about Lady Agatha’s unfortunate childhood, Izelle seemed to treat the new mistress with a certain kindness, making sure to provide for her needs. Izelle’s thoughtfulness was evident, considering that Agatha had never experienced the freedom to go out on her own.
Five maids followed Agatha. Cain had made an effort to find people who had worked at Kristin Duchy through inquiries and had selected several maids who were not much older than Agatha to accompany her.
