Agatha didn’t have the time to contemplate the connection between the Grand Duchess and Calvino County; instead, she quickly sought ways to escape the situation.
What to do? How could she hinder John Calvino and get out of here? She frantically tried to think of a solution, but her mind had turned white with the unexpected crisis.
“Don’t you dare mention that guy’s name in front of me. Got it, Agatha?”
“Snap out of it, John Calvino. If you still see me as the foolish lady shedding tears after the whipping in the County, you need to rethink.”
“Amusing. Now that the knight has taken your side, you think you’ve become something, but you’re nothing. Agatha Kristin.”
“No. The one who’s nothing is you, not me. Get a grip!”
Despite shouting to the point of her throat nearly bursting, there was only silence here, as if there was no one to help her. She had no idea where she was; the darkness outside the door revealed nothing.
Ethan. The person most likely to help her was Ethan. Someone had deliberately separated the knights’ carriage from the one she was in, but the senses of a seasoned knight, forged through numerous wars, were much sharper than the culprits could anticipate.
If Ethan, who had lived as a knight for a long time with Cain, knew about the incident involving Agatha, he might be rushing to find her.
In that case, all she had to do was hold out until the knights arrived. She had to somehow prevent John from taking her and leaving this place.
“Do you even realize what you’re doing right now?”
“Is it a crime to visit my future wife? You’re mine. That bastard, Cain, stole you from me!”
Logical conversation was already impossible. Agatha swallowed hard. She was concerned about Liana outside the carriage. Judging by how violently John swung his fist, it seemed like she might have lost consciousness from the impact.
“Well, fine. Anyway, you’ve come back to me, and I won’t let you go again.”
“Are you kidnapping me? The one who will become the Marchioness? Are you out of your mind?”
“No. You’ll have the name of Calvino. You’ll become my wife, warm my bed.”
John’s smiling face while saying this sent a shiver down Agatha’s spine.
“Even if he publicly declared to be Kristin’s man, will he really welcome a woman embraced by another man as his wife? Well, I don’t think so.”
“What nonsense are you babbling about?”
Dangerous. John’s pupils, already clouded by alcohol, became hazy, and his face, raging with anger, alternated between red and pale.
John took another step towards her. There was nowhere else to retreat. The distance between them was so close that if she reached out her hand, she would be helplessly within John’s grasp.
Agatha shifted her gaze to measure the distance from where she stood to the door. If she could just get out of here, she could run with all her might through the forest. However, John, with his large physique, blocked the entrance, making that option almost impossible.
In that moment, John reached out his hand. Startled, Agatha forcefully pushed his hand away.
“Don’t touch my body.”
“I told you sweetly. Be a little more playful.”
“Don’t touch me, ack!”
John grabbed Agatha’s arm and pulled her towards him. In an instant, Agatha, who resisted with all her might, tried to stand her ground, but it was in vain. Agatha’s slender frame, even thinner than ordinary women, was no match for the strength of an adult man, especially one who had lost his reason due to alcohol.
“I’ve been looking forward to the day when I can lay you on my bed. How dare you hit me from behind. You, of all people.”
He grabbed both of Agatha’s arms and shook her roughly. Under John’s merciless touch, Agatha’s frail body trembled like autumn leaves.
“Let go of this…!”
John grabbed the back of her head. Then, as if trying to kiss her, he thrust his face forward.
“I’d rather roll in a cesspool than be held by you.”
Agatha twisted her body to avoid the approaching face. Despite Agatha’s curses, John just laughed mockingly.
“John Calvino. There’s no one in the Count’s estate who doesn’t know your inferiority. Living as a pitiful and incompetent man under those capable elder brothers must have given you a strong sense of inferiority. Comparing yourself to them at every turn, you must have felt how pathetic you were.”
The smile vanished from John’s face.
“What nonsense are you suddenly talking about?”
“You couldn’t even inherit the title, and once your elder brothers take their share of the inheritance, there won’t be much left for you. It’s far from capable of handling your expenses.”
“Shut up.”
“Seems like you’re eyeing the Duchy’s property. Wake up, John. You can never utter Kristen’s name, and instead, you’ll have to confess and pay for everything you took from me, along with your mother.”
“I said shut up!”
Agatha’s provocation succeeded. John, who had been ready to pounce on her and crush her at any moment, tossed Agatha aside as if shaking off a bug.
Even then, his shoulders jerked violently, as if he couldn’t let go of his anger. His eyes, clouded with rage, glared like those of a malevolent creature.
“If I crush that mouth of yours, you won’t be able to speak so recklessly, will you?”
“…What? Ah!”
