From the age of 13, when Agatha lost her girliness, John began to tease his cousin. The number of times he was caught trying to peek at her bathing was too many to count with both hands.
“If you keep running like that, I want to conquer it. Agatha.”
He whispered, nibbling at Agatha’s earlobe. She’d rather have hundreds of insects crawl inside her clothes than endure this.
“You lunatic… Let go of me!” she protested.
It wasn’t enough; she ended up with his nose against her neck, gasping for breath. Then he added, “Indeed, you always smell so delicious.” He chuckled before finally releasing her.
Madman. Every inch of him was insane
Agatha glared at him as if she wanted to kill him.
Staying here any longer, it felt like she would either die, go crazy, or kill someone. Agatha’s fists trembled.
Imperial Year 519, January.
The seemingly endless time of suffering eventually comes to an end. The time that seemed like it would never pass has already gone by, nearly nine years.
Agatha looked up at the tall man before her.
“What did you just say?”
It was a face she had erased from her mind due to the difficulty of surviving alone. A lowly knight from a minor noble family, he had risen to become a war hero through his own efforts, receiving accolades and even knighthood from the Emperor. He had sworn loyalty to Duke Kristin, a humble brown-haired knight. Cain Vernat.
She couldn’t understand why he was here. This place was the venue for the princess’s birthday party, and Agatha had barely managed to obtain Stella’s permission to leave the Count’s mansion.
However, here, she encountered an unexpected face, something she hadn’t thought of at all. It was the first time in nine years since she had last seen that face at the Duke’s funeral.
“Lady Kristin, I want to marry you.”
For a moment, she stared blankly at the man’s face. The man before her, Cain Vernat, had just proposed to her. Why would the ice-cold knight, who shed neither blood nor tears, do such a thing?
“Why?”
Her voice trembled with anger. It was understandable, considering that he was a man who had betrayed his oath of loyalty to Duke Kristin.
When she thought of her father, who had taken in the unfortunate boy left alone without a place to go and raised him like a son, only to have his entire knighthood taken away in return, Agatha’s heart still burned with anger.
“Well, are you planning to reject my proposal this time as well, Lady?”
‘This time.’
Cain added that expression with a mischievous jest.
After the Duke and Duchess of Kristin passed away in an unfortunate accident, the Kristin estate had lost everything in the span of nine years.
The knights who remained after the loss of their lord considered it foolish to waste their time in a disbanded knighthood. One by one, the knights left the Kristin estate, including Cain, as they believed it was futile to remain loyal to the Kristin family after its downfall.
Cain had shown exceptional skill since his promotion to a junior knight. At the young age of seventeen, he had caught the Emperor’s eye, immediately leaving the Kristin estate and joining the Imperial Order of Knights.
Initially, the remaining people called Cain a traitor and pointed fingers at him. However, as time passed, even they realized that there was no hope left for the weakened Kristin estate. They expressed regret, apologized, and left.
While the core knights of the order remained, they alone couldn’t sustain the knighthood. Thus, the Kristin Order of Knights was essentially disbanded.
Ironically, the one extending a helping hand to such a disbanded knighthood was Cain himself.
Under the Emperor’s orders, Cain had entered the conquest wars, achieving victory in every battle he participated in. He gained significant recognition and obtained the title of “Marquis Vernat” without any hereditary claims, solely based on his own merits.
Rising from the bottom to the highest echelons, even overshadowing the flight of a soaring bird. he became a formidable authority, capable of commanding the Empire
Some referred to him as a hero of troubled times, while others argued that he was just a guy who knew how to swing a sword and happened to be lucky. Regardless of the opinions, Cain had transformed into a completely different person from the humble boy he once was.
After gaining the Emperor’s favor and obtaining his title as a rising noble, Cain Vernat’s first act was to acquire the remnants of the Kristin Order of Knights. The deputy commander, Rubens, had strongly resisted, but his opposition proved futile in the face of Marquis Vernat.
Agatha, too, cried out in despair, saying it was an unthinkable event, but her cries alone couldn’t reach Marquis Vernat.
In this way, the Kristin Order of Knights was renamed the Vernat Order of Knights and completely disappeared into history.
“I don’t understand what this means.”
