Agatha cut off Ethan. She tried to look stern, but Ethan seemed unfazed and merely smiled more brightly.
“Sir Cain was very worried about you, Madam.”
“Sir Ethan, really?”
“Well, I am, after all, tasked with looking after and advising the commander. But, Madam, you seemed so concerned about him that it seemed you couldn’t bear to be away from Arta.”
“Enough, Sir Ethan!”
His teasing was exasperating. Her face felt hot, likely blushing intensely. Agatha bit her lip and glared at Ethan.
“You two seem to be getting along well.”
Cain, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke.
“Getting along well? Sir Ethan here keeps trying to tease me at every opportunity.”
“Teasing? That would be inappropriate. How could I possibly tease you, Madam?”
“See? Even now…”
“Ethan.”
Cain’s tone was quiet but carried an edge. He must’ve been annoyed at his subordinate teasing his wife. Noting Cain’s frosty expression, Ethan coughed awkwardly and averted his gaze.
“I asked you to assist the Madam in my stead, and it seems you’ve become quite familiar friends. I didn’t anticipate that you two would grow so close.”
The slight smile that Cain had shown earlier vanished, replaced by a sterner expression. As Agatha scrambled to grasp why he seemed upset, Ethan and Lerman quickly excused themselves and left the tent.
“Ah, I’ll call the servant in.”
Trying to lighten the mood, Agatha forced a cheerful tone.
“That won’t be necessary. I can manage my bandages myself.”
“How will you manage with one hand?”
“If a knight can’t take care of his own wounds, what good is he?”
Cain then unsheathed his sword and placed it beside the armory before beginning to remove his armor.
True to his word, Cain was adept at disarming himself. Naturally, as a knight accustomed to the battlefield, he wouldn’t have had the luxury of always having attendants to help him change.
Having quickly removed his armor, Cain sat on the bed wearing only a thin shirt. As he unbuttoned a few of the top buttons, glimpses of bandages could be seen through the gaps in his shirt.
Despite him saying he can manage on his own, it appeared he was not without discomfort. Every movement caused a wrinkle of pain to form on his brow. Was he used to handling his wounds or bearing the pain itself? Either way, it was heart-wrenching to watch silently.
“Let me help you.”
It seemed better to offer help rather than just watch. As Agatha stood up and approached, Cain immediately raised his hand to stop her. Yet, a sudden movement seemed to aggravate his shoulder, and his expression tensed with pain.
“You know that not moving it much would help it heal faster, right?”
She was unable to just stand by while he was in pain, so she decided to ignore his protests and use the items she had prepared to help him as best she could.
“It’s fine, I can manage.”
“I’m not okay with that.”
She gently grasped his arm, which he kept moving, and Cain let out a resigned chuckle.
“You can be quite stubborn about strange things.”
“That’s my line. You’re the one who’s being unnecessarily stubborn. It’s okay to accept help sometimes.”
“Let’s just say we both have our stubborn streaks.”
Agatha then reached for his buttons to help him change the bandages, which naturally involved taking off his shirt first.
Agatha began to unbutton his shirt one by one, but as more of his skin was exposed, she blinked in embarrassment. She hadn’t considered that she would have to see him shirtless just to clean his wound.
As she paused with her hands on the buttons, Cain looked down at her hesitating and began to chuckle, knowing why she did that.
“What are you doing? You need to take off the shirt to change the bandages.”
“Yes, I know. I’m just not used to this. I’ve never undressed anyone like this before.”
“So, let me do it then.”
“It’s better if I do it, even if it’s slow. Just stay still and don’t move.”
With her insistence, Cain had no choice. He did what Agatha told him to relax his arms
Still, Agatha seemed to struggle with the shirt for a long while. Her hand paused in mid-air around the navel area, hesitating whether to unbutton the last few buttons or not.
The seriousness with which she swallowed her saliva, as if preparing for a great ordeal, was funny.
Cain bit his lip to suppress laughter, not wanting to embarrass her further, as she might start shedding tears out of embarrassment.
“Could you lean back a bit, please?”
“Like this?”
For her, pulling the shirt out from the waistband seemed to be a major challenge. Sweat beads had even formed on her forehead.
“I’ll take the shirt off now. Just stay like that.”
Without realizing it, she had already unbuttoned the shirt and quickly pulled it off, exposing his shoulders. As he moved his arms back for a brief moment, a sharp pain shot through his shoulder.
