Agatha noticed how long Cain’s eyelashes were as she observed his defenseless face. This was likely the only opportunity she might ever get to do so. It was a rare, perhaps once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Her gaze moved from his long eyelashes to his high, sculpted nose. The sharpness of his nose was striking. Agatha understood why so many women blushed and praised Cain Vernat.
She remembered her own first impression of him; it wasn’t just that he was handsome, there was something intriguing about his face that had captivated her, leaving her staring blankly.
And his massive, yet delicate stature—what about that?
As her eyes continued downward, passing the angular line of his shoulders, Agatha realized she might appear to be a frivolous woman, overly interested in a man’s body.
She quickly turned her head away.
Her face was burning hotter than ever before. This marriage was supposed to be a mere contract. She had once sternly reminded him, even when he had suggested that sharing a bed was an option if she wanted to.
And now, to be so enchanted by his face… It was fortunate that no one else was there to witness her condition.
Why was her heart fluttering? Agatha exhaled sharply.
“Ah…”
But she shouldn’t have done that. Biting her lip inadvertently brought back memories of the things done the night before.
The softness of Cain’s lips, the heat inside his mouth, and how firm his arms had been around her caused her heart to race.
Agatha picked up the scattered clothing from the floor. She looked around for a place to hang them, finally spotting a chair and pulling it back, causing a creaking noise that made her heart skip a beat.
Hoping he hadn’t woken up, Agatha tiptoed to check on Cain once more. He appeared to be sleeping soundly. After reassuring herself that his eyelids were firmly shut, she relaxed and began to redress.
Absorbed in putting her clothes back on, Agatha didn’t realize that Cain had opened his eyes and was watching her.
She had no way of knowing that he had never been asleep to begin with.

Agatha fell back asleep again and woke up in Cain’s arms. Days passed without her knowing whether it was morning or night; she seemed to have forgotten the world outside the tent.
Liana paced anxiously outside the tent, waiting for Agatha who hadn’t shown her face for three days. Despite the servants joking that a newly reunited couple deserved their privacy, Liana couldn’t hide her worry.
Knowing how Agatha and Cain had come to be married, she found it difficult to accept that they would suddenly share a bed. She worried if something might have happened to Agatha, or if something already had.
On the fourth day, her fears were put to rest when Agatha emerged from the tent, still in Cain’s arms.
The couple looked completely different from four days ago.
To outsiders, they might seem like a loving couple who had traveled a long distance to be together. But those in the know understood that until recently, they had been avoiding any contact beyond holding hands or a kiss on the hand.
Now, Agatha who stepped out of the tent in Cain’s arms, looked like a young girl freshly fallen in love. Her cheeks flushed at every word from Cain, and she beamed at his every gesture.
Marquis Vernat’s usual stern demeanor seemed ironed out; his brow, typically furrowed when speaking with subordinates, appeared unusually smooth, and he even sported an ill-fitting smile.
Whenever Agatha called, he would drop everything and hurry to her side. Who would have imagined that Cain Vernat, the knight of ice and blood, would turn into a doting fool at a single word from his wife?
In the knights’ order, only Ethan had remarked, ‘I always knew our commander was that kind of man,’ while whistling cheerfully. Yet, no one really believed him.
With the Marchioness’s arrival in Arta, a warm spring breeze seemed to blow through the camp, a place typically distant from any gentleness. The once strict and aloof commander began to treat his subordinates with warmth and discarded his cold demeanor.
There was an old saying among the people that a sudden change in someone’s demeanor meant that their death was near. Some of the lower-ranking knights even whispered, worried that such a drastic change might spell trouble for their commander.
Most of these lower-ranking knights were young men either just reaching or about to reach adulthood. Having spent most of their lives in the knights’ order, many had little to no experience with women beyond the passing one-night stands.
How could they understand that even the coldest of men could become a fool when struck by love?
As rumors began to swirl among the young knights about the sudden change in Cain’s behavior, Ethan stepped in to quash the wild speculations.
