- Chapter 71 - Friendship by the Bonfire
Ruby nodded as she calmly continued to eat the roasted sweet potatoes.
“He was very brave from a young age.”
“We have the highest mountain in our estate, and lions, not just wolves, have entered there in groups. But our lord took a sword and went to handle them all.”
“He was only about 15 at that time, right?”
“That’s right, around that age.”
The conversation naturally shifted to Ivan’s childhood. Meanwhile, a pile of sweet potato peels had accumulated in front of Ruby.
“Oh, let’s stop chatting and let us handle the rest of the laundry.”
“I hadn’t thought of that.”
At the servants’ words, Ruby gulped down the sweet potato in her mouth and hurriedly said, “There’s not much left! I can do it.”
“Oh, what are you saying? We can’t let you keep doing this with our soft and delicate hands.”
“Miss, please enjoy the remaining sweet potatoes here.”
Before Ruby could say anything more, the four servants swiftly took charge. Each of them commented on Ruby’s laundry.
“Oh, she did a great job washing it so well.”
“Indeed. How did you manage to get rid of the stains so quickly?”
“Oh, about that…”
Ruby, who had been listening to the servants’ conversation, got up and approached them. She had unconsciously become quite friendly with the servants.
“If you pre-soak the clothes with foamed soap, the stains come off more easily. Before that, if you apply soap to the collars and sleeves separately, the stains disappear more effectively too.”
“It would be great if you could let the maids in charge of laundry know about this.”
“Miss, you’re quite wise. I’ve never seen any maids wash clothes so meticulously.”
It was definitely true that praise made a person feel good. Ruby was excited and shared everything she knew.
In the midst of it, she finished all the laundry that had piled up. The servants, considering Ruby had briefly dipped her hands in water, seated her again near the bonfire and added more firewood.
As she watched the roaring fire and finished the last of the sweet potatoes, she noticed the presence of a group of spirits gathered around.
“Oh, right.”
Basically, spirits with strong yin liked warmth, so they had all huddled around the bonfire.
The servants scratched their heads as Ruby slowly scanned the surroundings. To their eyes, she seemed to be staring into space.
As all of them stared intently into the fire, a little spirit cautiously approached. Ruby’s eyes widened as she saw the spirit cling to one of the servants. The spirit skillfully climbed onto the servant’s back. By the way he held his head tightly, it was clear he hadn’t done this just once or twice.
“What’s this?”
The servant heard her mumble and caught her eyes fixed on something above his head. Thinking he had misheard her, he cleared his throat awkwardly.
‘He’s my big brother….’
At that moment, the little spirit, who had been the subject of Ruby’s scrutiny, calmly responded.
“I see.”
‘How is it that you can see us, big sister?’
“Just figure it out yourself.”
‘My uncles and aunts said I shouldn’t go near you…’
“Why did you come, then? I’m not too keen on being bothered either.”
‘But because of you I couldn’t meet my big brother….’
“Why is that my fault?”
‘You used some strange power to keep us away, so we couldn’t meet big brother on the days he worked inside the mansion.’
Ruby fell silent at the younger spirit’s words. It was true that she had driven the spirits away.
While she was talking to the little spirit, the faces of the servants around her turned stark white. One servant in particular, the elder brother of the young spirit, looked like he was about to faint.
