Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 117
As soon as the people gathered in the center, Irene unhesitatingly broke the bracelet. Then, when she raised sacred power, the people’s bodies were revitalized.
“Can we break the iron bars?”
“That would be difficult. We must wait for someone to open it.”
As they waited with anxiety, a figure appeared beyond the iron bars.
“You are really troublesome.”
It was Burt. He spoke with a relatively gentle voice and immediately cut through the iron bars.
When the iron bars that seemed they would never open were destroyed, the people shouted.
“Freedom! Finally, freedom!”
“Shh! Someone could hear!”
Seeing them cover each other’s mouths made Irene laugh.
But now was not the time to be laughing, so she immediately asked Burt,
“Which way is the escape route?”
“For now, go this way. Go all the way and the knights will be waiting.”
The people bobbed their heads, but they seemed hesitant to move easily as if there was something bothering them. Charles stepped forward and said instead,
“Thank you for helping us, but we will move on our own.”
“What? Why?”
To Irene’s question, Charles lightly tapped his dark hair.
“Because ominous symbols aren’t welcomed anywhere.”
“I have an ominous symbol too!”
“Lady Irene is a saint. They probably won’t welcome us,”
Charles said, glancing at them.
“Then what are you going to do?”
Burt asked, looking them over.
“We will escape on our own,”
“And after that?”
“We will return to our families.”
“In that condition?”
The lack of food and the hard labor had left most of them with thin bodies. Despite Irene’s efforts to neutralize the poison and revitalize them, it didn’t seem enough.
“Let’s go together for now. I won’t stop you when you leave. My knights are waiting and won’t treat you harshly.”
“Can we trust you?”
“You can trust me. I swear on my name.”
“In that case, we will accept your help in the meantime. Thank you.”
After Burt swearing on his name, Charles led the group in the direction Burt indicated.
“Now then,”
Burt said, turning to Irene.
“It seems like you’re not in the best condition either, Lady Saint.”
“I’m not that sick,”
Though she had fallen ill a few times, others had taken care of her diligently, and her condition hadn’t worsened as much as she thought.
“Not that sick, you say,”
Burt let out a short sigh and, without asking for consent, lifted Irene into his arms.
Startled, she tried to protest but couldn’t bring herself to speak. He seemed very upset.
“Why are you upset?”
“Me? I’m not upset at all. Just the same as always.”
“You’re talking a lot.”
“I’m talking just the same as always.”
His face, which had looked so frustrated, returned to its usual calm demeanor so quickly it seemed like an illusion.
‘Did I imagine it?’
Irene wondered, leaning against Burt to avoid falling.
“Did they do anything to you, Lady Irene?”
Irene gave an awkward smile.
“Actually, I was poisoned.”
Burt’s quick steps came to an abrupt halt.
“Is that all?”
Was it just her imagination, or had his tone turned cold again?
“They also cursed me.”
“Do you know how to detoxify it?”
“I heard that I need to come into contact with the sacred power of the heretics to avoid dying.”
“That’s just a way to maintain it. I’m asking about the detoxification method.”
“I don’t know.”
As soon as those words left her mouth, Burt set Irene down on the ground. As soon as she stood up, he placed both hands on her shoulders and glared at her fiercely.
“Are you out of your mind? Have you forgotten that you promised me you wouldn’t die?”
“I haven’t forgotten! I didn’t take it because I wanted to die. So please, calm down and try to relax.”
Grit. The sound of Burt grinding his teeth was audible.
“I’ll make sure to capture the key figures alive.”
“Thank you.”
“Don’t think this lets you off the hook. Do you have any idea how much—!”
Burt was in the middle of speaking when suddenly her head spun. The things in front of her started dancing and her vision blurred.
“Lady Irene?”
“Ah, it seems the curse is activating.”
Irene managed to say that much before collapsing to the ground. She briefly felt a hand catching her waist, but that was all.
