Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 122
‘Okay, Okay. I don’t remember anything after the curse.’
Irene reminded that lie herself, struggling to maintain her composure.
“I’ll call the physician.”
Yes, that seemed like a better idea.
“Noah, fetch the physician as quickly as possible.”
“Yes.”
Noah nodded at Burt’s instruction. The physician was supposed to come anyway, so summoning them sooner wouldn’t be a problem.
As Noah left the room, Burt sat back down on the chair beside the bed.
‘I should have realized this.’
Burt is a king. He doesn’t need to fetch the physician himself.
“Aren’t you going to leave?”
“Should I?”
Burt’s response was one of genuine curiosity, making it hard for Irene to argue.
“No, it’s fine. Do as you please.”
“Alright, I will.”
By then, the quick-footed Noah had returned with the physician.
“The Saintess is unwell!”
The physician, arriving promptly, opened his bag and took out his examination tools. With delicate hands, he examined Irene and then tilted his head in confusion.
“I’m sorry, but your physical condition doesn’t seem worse than usual.”
“Her face was red, and her heart was racing earlier.”
“H-How did you know that?”
“With a little attention, it’s easy to notice.”
Why was he even listening to someone else’s heartbeat? Irene glared at Burt.
“Regardless, there’s nothing wrong with her at the moment,”
The physician said, looking slightly perplexed.
“Perhaps you were emotionally agitated for a moment?”
“Did my words upset you that much?”
“Y-Yes, they did.”
To be honest, they didn’t bother her that much, but she couldn’t tell the truth here.
“I see. I will try to be more tactful in the future.”
So he still plans to say it! It was utterly infuriating.
Even after the physician finished his examination and left, Burt remained in the room. The silence between the two was awkward.
Knock, knock.
The sound of a knock felt like a divine intervention.
“It’s Allen.”
“Come in, Sir Allen.”
Dressed in silver armor, Allen entered and immediately knelt down.
“Sir Allen?”
“I sincerely apologize for failing to protect you, Saintess. I am prepared to accept any punishment you deem fit.”
He seemed to have a penchant for punishment, having said something similar before.
“It’s alright. In the end, I’m safe, and you did your best.”
“Nonetheless, a punishment is necessary.”
Though he asked for a punishment, Irene had no idea what to say. It seemed Allen realized this belatedly.
“Though it may be impossible now, I will engage in secluded training once the temple is stable.”
He meant he would lock himself in the training grounds, engaging in penance and training without leaving.
“Alright.”
“Thank you, merciful Saintess.”
Conversations with Allen always went this way. He treated her with an excessive amount of reverence, which made Irene a bit uncomfortable.
“And there is one more thing we learned from the heretics.”
“What is it?”
“They have made contact with a foreign king. They disguised themselves as coming from the east,”
When Guy became king, some nobles and knights who only followed Garan left the country. It seemed they had disguised themselves as these defectors.
“What did they discuss during the meeting?”
“They expressed their grievances and suggested imprisoning the Saintess.”
“Did Shah-Naz agree to this?”
Burt asked.
“He neither agreed nor disagreed. But I believe not rejecting such a proposal is a crime in itself,”
Allen replied coldly.
“Moreover, the contact did not end there. This kidnapping would have been impossible without the king’s cooperation. He must be interrogated.”
“He’s a king. Is that even possible?”
“Saintess, Garan, who disappeared, was also a king.”
Allen knew that Irene and Burt were involved in Garan’s disappearance. He had been guarding the altar that whole day, so there was no way he wouldn’t know.
“That’s true. He was a king too.”
“I will use the temple’s authority to request a private audience with the king.”
“It’s difficult to start a conversation by throwing someone into prison.”
“I will attend the audience as well,”
“You are most welcome.”
Thus, Allen and Burt joined forces, all for the sake of the Saintess, Irene.
Knowing this made her feelings quite complex.
“Then, I will proceed immediately.”
“Thank you, as always.”
“It is simply my duty.”
Allen replied before leaving the room. His departing figure seemed reassuring.
“Burt.”
“Yes.”
She wanted to thank him as well, but the words wouldn’t come out.
Whether he understood this or not, Burt gave a faint smile.
“Then, I will also take my leave. Take care of your health.”
“Yes.”
She suddenly remembered she had forgotten to ask Burt to help improve her physical strength.
‘I’ll talk to him about that later.’
For now, there were more pressing matters to address.
