Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 132
Not long after returning to her quarters, Allen came back with news.
“The man who died, he liked to drink but was well-regarded by those around him. They say he’s not someone who would do such a thing.”
“But he did, didn’t he?”
“Yes, and after examining his body closely, we found traces of a strange energy. It was similar to the aura we encountered from the heretics before.”
“Are you saying he was a heretic?”
“I am not certain. So we are planning to retrieve and test all the drinks he consumed.”
“I see.”
“I apologize. I could not find out more.”
“No, you’ve done your best.”
With that, the conversation ended. After Allen left, Burt spoke up.
“It’s about Sage.”
“Yes.”
“There are no visible flaws to exploit.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, it seems difficult to act against him immediately. It will take a longer-term approach.”
“Didn’t you say you would exact revenge for me?”
“Of course. We’re already working on something, and as soon as we have just cause, we’ll make sure your desires are fulfilled.”
Irene knew this as well. Even though he put her in the torture chamber, objectively speaking, Sage wasn’t a bad person.
He just loved Ramiel too much and believed he had committed a sin.
‘But didn’t others feel the same way?’
So, she couldn’t let the flames of hatred die out. How unfair would it be to those who suffered first?
‘It has to be fair.’
Revenge must be fair. Irene clenched her hands together tightly.
“Then there’s no need to stay here any longer.”
“That’s right.”
“The last stop is the northern country.”
“My country.”
“What kind of place is it?”
“It’s much colder than the south. Since the center has little climate variation, it might surprise you.”
Burt spoke softly about his homeland. Because it was so cold, farming was difficult, and it was hard to sustain without the Saintess’s help.
“However, it is rich in minerals.”
There were many mines, and the winter forests provided abundant timber.
“When the wind is calm, we sometimes go hunting.”
The game they hunted was excellent food. They fed the entrails to the animals and ate the meat themselves. The skins were tanned and used to make clothes.
“I will gift you a fur coat when you arrive. You’ll need it to withstand the cold.”
“Is it that bad?”
The southern country was bearable enough.
“Yes, the north is the harshest of the four countries. Even so, people manage to live there.”
When Burt spoke about his country, his face showed a hint of affection. For someone who seemed not to be attached to anything, there was something he cared about after all.
“There are dog sleds as well.”
“Dogs pull sleds? How does that work?”
Having only seen the small dogs owned by noblewomen, she couldn’t imagine it. How many of those dogs would it take to pull a person?
‘Wouldn’t it take dozens?’
“I’m not sure what you’re imagining, but that’s not it. The dogs in the north are all large and have thick fur. It’s essential for surviving in the harsh lands.”
“How big are they?”
“Bigger than people.”
“The dogs?”
“Yes, so about four of them can easily pull a decent weight.”
“You’re not lying, right?”
Burt chuckled softly at Irene’s words.
“Why would I lie?”
“Good point.”
Burt wasn’t the type to joke around. So everything he said must be true.
“I’m looking forward to it.”
“Please do.”
* * *
A few days later, Allen left some Holy Knights at the western palace and turned his steps northward with Irene.
They did not forget to grant wishes along the way. Most of the requests were similar to what they usually received, so they weren’t difficult to fulfill.
If there was one problem, it was the strange rumors. The rumors that had started in the center had spread here as well.
Could it be the same in the south or east? Out of curiosity, Irene contacted Guy and Aura, but they said no such rumors were spreading there.
“I suspect Lady Ramiel.”
Lani unhesitatingly pointed to her as the culprit.
“She seems nice, but she’s probably rotten inside.”
“Why do you think so?”
“She gives off the same vibe as Mary.”
Mary. The maid who once bullied Lani and abused Irene. She was now suffering in reverse, though.
“And Sage has changed, hasn’t he? I saw him once, and his eyes were strange. He looked like he was Enchanted. Eyes like that are dangerous. That’s what my grandmother used to say.”
“Enchanted?”
“Yes, that’s exactly how they looked.”
Lani chattered on while Noah quietly attended to Irene’s needs beside her.
