Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 146
“Why?”
She asked, tilting her head in curiosity.
“Because I have more precious people now than before.”
“You’re already broken.”
“I’m not broken.”
“No, you are. To give affection to such beings.”
Clicking her tongue as if she pitied Irene, Camille turned her back.
“I suppose I’ll have to give the position of Saintess to another child.”
Camille’s figure began to fade.
“Try clinging to the goddess who won’t wake up.”
Then everything disappeared. The world engulfed in darkness was lonely and terrifying.
She feared she might not escape, but something took her hand.
Irene knew whose hand it was.
‘Burt.’
Only then did she cast off her fear and open her eyes.
“Lady Saintess!”
As she opened her eyes, she saw familiar clothing right in front of her. Beside her, Lani and Noah were looking at her with worried expressions.
“Your fever wouldn’t go down, so we were worried. Even though Sir Burt helped, the fever was too high.”
Lani sniffled softly. Seeing Noah patting Lani’s back, Irene gave a faint smile.
Noah, who seemed to reject others, had changed. They were ordinary people just like everyone else.
‘My choice wasn’t wrong.’
A smile kept creeping onto her lips.
“Did something good happen?”
“I just refused a bad person.”
“A bad person?”
“No, to be exact, not a person. Camille. Her.”
“The Mother of Demons?”
“Yes.”
Irene tried her best to keep her eyes open and continue the conversation, but her vision kept blurring.
“It would be best if you rested more before talking.”
“But I’m fine.”
“You don’t look fine at all.”
“Really, I am.”
As she denied it several times, a large hand covered Irene’s eyes. Her vision went dark again, but this time she wasn’t afraid.
Rather, warmth filled her heart due to the kindness.
“Thank you.”
Muttering softly, Irene closed her eyes again. It seemed she needed a bit more rest.
While Irene slept, the two kings, the captain of the paladins, and the High Priest gathered to talk.
“Everything is a mess. Why did I know nothing until it reached this point?”
Grein continually blamed herself.
“It’s because you trusted him too much. It’s better to stop digging yourself into a hole. Instead, let’s discuss what to do going forward.”
Guy spoke coldly, telling Grein to pull herself together.
“You’re now the only High Priest. You need to stand firm and take the lead.”
“Yes, you’re right.”
Grein replied, looking as if she’d aged ten years.
“Have you heard any news from Lady Aura?”
“Yes, she sent a messenger bird. The gates are closed, but there’s no significant movement yet.”
“It will be difficult if it turns into a siege.”
“For now, we need to try contacting the inside. After the last incident, we’ve increased the number of spies in the west.”
Burt calmly stated something that would shock others.
“Same here.”
Guy was the same. Although Allen gave them a peculiar look, he didn’t reprimand them. He understood that now was not the time.
Only Grein was shocked.
“Is that acceptable?”
“Why wouldn’t it be?”
If they had placed more spies in the temple earlier, they might have prevented this situation.
“How is the reorganization of the temple going?”
“We don’t have enough priests, so we’re recruiting people from outside to reorganize. They hadn’t managed anything until now.”
Grein let out a deep sigh.
“Can we mobilize the remaining priests?”
“I can send them if it’s urgent, but it might be difficult. The Saintess is bedridden, and the priests have overexerted themselves. Their divine power is recovering slower than usual, so they won’t be much help.”
“What about the paladins?”
“We’re ready. Even without divine power, we’re experts in combat.”
Allen replied firmly. Indeed, having just one order of armored knights would be a great help.
Moreover, the paladins consisted of several such orders. Their strength would surely be valuable.
“Then it seems we’ve reached a conclusion. We need to open the gates of the western kingdom.”
“We can’t let the events that happened in the capital repeat themselves.”
They gathered their opinions and reached a conclusion: to attack the western kingdom.
