Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 151
In the northern king’s tent, Irene, the saintess, was there.
While blessing Burt’s weapon, Irene occasionally glanced at him nervously. After hesitating several times, she finally spoke.
“Come back safely. Don’t get hurt.”
At her words, Burt looked at her as if he had heard something unexpected.
“Why! It’s unsettling when someone you know gets hurt.”
“Is that all?”
“What do you mean?”
“Am I just ‘someone you know’?”
“What more do you want?”
In response to Irene’s question, Burt answered,
“I don’t know that either.”
He didn’t even know what he wanted himself, which left Irene speechless.
“Let’s talk after I return.”
“Alright.”
Burt turned away from Irene and left the tent. As soon as he stepped out, several holy knights surrounded him as escorts.
And thus, the battle that would later go down in history began.
* * *
Before long, the number of ghouls increased, and they charged out of the gates. The first to face them were the holy knights armed with consecrated weapons.
“Oh Goddess! Grant us Your protection!”
“Oh Goddess! Watch over us!”
With the sacred power of the priests following them, the ghouls collapsed helplessly.
Then, a radiant light burst forth from the central camp, surging toward the ghouls.
The ghouls struck by the light either disintegrated or staggered, unable to maintain their balance.
At that moment, elite knights from each nation joined the battle.
“For the king!”
Though the number of ghouls was not small, they gradually began to fall apart. Victory seemed almost within reach.
Then, suddenly, several holy knights fighting at the front spewed blood and collapsed.
“Lord Sage!”
Some shouted the name of the figure who had just appeared and struck down the holy knights. The one who attacked them was Sage, the king of the West.
Guy, who was nearby, immediately launched an attack. Shadows grabbed at his ankles, and a sharp spear descended from the sky aimed at him.
But none of it was effective. Sage melted away as if dissolving, vanishing from sight.
Then, he reappeared behind Guy. Just as his sharp claws were about to pierce Guy’s neck, a flaming sword struck him.
It was Aura.
Burt joined the fray as well. The temperature suddenly plummeted, and white snow began to fall from the sky.
In the midst of this, Burt gradually froze Sage’s body. Though Sage had been able to avoid most attacks, he couldn’t escape entirely, and one of his frozen arms shattered.
However, the shattered arm reattached itself to his body, as if time was reversing.
“This isn’t normal,” Aura remarked, raising her sword, her voice tinged with disbelief.
“He’s not just an ordinary ghoul.”
He looked more human than a typical ghoul, though his pale skin and the blood-tears streaming from his eyes were unnatural.
“Burt,” Sage hissed, sharp fangs protruding from his mouth.
“At least he can still speak,” Burt noted.
“I am a king.”
Aura frowned deeply at his words.
“Someone who neglects her people is no king.”
“My people.”
Sage looked around and then smiled, as if relieved.
“My people are safe.”
“Are ghouls your people now?”
Guy asked, but this time, there was no reply. Sage’s body dissipated like smoke and vanished again.
This time, he appeared in front of Burt.
Burt, blocking Sage with a shield made of ice crystals, thrust his sword into Sage’s body.
For the first time, the body that had previously withstood the power of a king took damage.
“It seems only blessed weapons can harm him.”
At this, Aura raised her sword, and Guy unsheathed the whip coiled around his arm. All their weapons had been blessed by Irene before they left.
With Allen joining the fight, having finished dealing with the ghouls, even Sage seemed to sense the danger.
He attempted to shapeshift and take flight, but Allen’s holy power kept him grounded, unable to escape far.
From then on, the attacks came relentlessly. Sage’s body burned and withered wherever the holy power touched, eliciting screams of agony.
At first, he thrashed in pain, but soon, Sage realized something.
The more he was exposed to the holy power, the clearer his mind became.
Grinding his teeth, Sage grabbed Allen’s weapon with his hand.
His theory proved correct. Though his hand disintegrated from the touch, his mind regained control.
“Burt.”
The only person here that felt familiar to him was Burt. So, he called out his name.
Just as Burt was about to continue his assault, something in Sage’s voice made him hesitate.
“K-Kill me.”
