Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 188
“That would be impossible.”
Knowing how stubborn King Burt was, it seemed an impossible task. But when Hansen saw the determined glint in his daughter’s eyes, he could no longer stop her.
To Hansen, Burt the king was important, but his daughter was just as precious. Even if he believed she wouldn’t succeed, he wanted to grant her wish.
“Very well, since you also need to meet the new successor, I’ll speak to the chancellor. You can take Milli and visit the capital.”
“Thank you!”
“But whatever you do, don’t overstep your bounds. He’s much more fearsome than you think.”
“Don’t worry.”
Luna smiled as if to ease his concern.
Not long after, a group from the north was sent to the capital. Among them were the new successor Milli and Hansen’s daughter, Luna.
As soon as they arrived, Sizu set off to inform Burt. He had been spending very little time in his room lately.
“Oh, Sir Sizu.”
Lani, who was standing in front of the saintess’s room, greeted Sizu warmly when she saw him.
“Hello? Is Lord Burt inside?”
“Yes. It seems the snack time has just ended. Shall I inform him?”
“I would appreciate it if you did.”
“Oh, please, feel free to speak more casually.”
Lani smiled and gently knocked on the door. Though the knock was soft, it was enough to be heard inside. Shortly after, Burt’s voice came through.
“Come in.”
As the intricately crafted door opened, Burt could be seen sitting on a large sofa in front of the table. The saintess, Irene, was lying beside him, resting her head on his thigh, though she occasionally frowned, seemingly uncomfortable about something.
The reason was obvious. Burt’s thigh was too firm and high to make a comfortable pillow. Yet, since she was always in that position, it didn’t seem like she completely disliked it.
Lani quietly began to clear the table, while Sizu approached Burt.
“Lord Burt.”
“Yes, what is it?”
“People from the north have arrived.”
“The successor?”
“Yes, along with a few others.”
“I can guess who they are without being told.”
A few nobles dissatisfied with Burt’s recent decision had likely come along. They were probably hoping to persuade him in some way.
“Ugh.”
A delicate hand scratched down Burt’s firm thigh. After a few restless movements, Irene opened her eyes.
“The pillow is uncomfortable.”
“Oh dear, how unfortunate,”
Burt chuckled softly as he brushed Irene’s hair away from her forehead.
“Isn’t there anything you can do about it?”
“I cannot. But how about another pillow?”
As he said that, Burt extended his arm. However, being a well-trained swordsman, Burt’s arm was just as firm as his thigh. It was an improvement, but not by much.
“That’ll do.”
Irene slowly lifted her body. After finishing her snack and taking her medicine, she always felt drowsy. Even though her body wasn’t destined for a long life, it was better to maintain her health as much as possible.
She didn’t refuse the medicine the physicians gave her, nor the exercises Burt encouraged her to do.
The two of them rose from the sofa and moved to the bed. The sofa was too uncomfortable to lie down with her head on his arm. Watching this for the first time, Sizu’s cheeks flushed pink.
“Are you alright?”
Lani, noticing Sizu’s reaction, asked him.
“I’m fine.”
“There’s no need to be embarrassed. They do this often. It’s just a nap, nothing more.”
“I see.”
Sizu cleared his throat softly and took the basket of dishes from Lani’s hands.
“Let me help you.”
“I’d appreciate that.”
It was a peaceful afternoon. Or rather, perhaps only this place was peaceful. The people who had arrived from the north were already prepared to stir up trouble.
Although they couldn’t storm into the saintess’s room immediately, the moment Burt stepped out, they would latch onto him.
‘Now that I think about it, Lady Luna has also arrived.’
She was a famously beautiful lady, known for openly declaring her affection for King Burt. If Irene hadn’t been in the picture, she might have even become queen.
‘I hope nothing serious happens.’
The saintess had already endured too much suffering. She was just now beginning to enjoy a brief moment of peace, and Sizu hoped that others wouldn’t disturb it. Considering all that the saintess had done for the world, she deserved at least that much.
Sizu and Lani quietly left the room together.
Milli was now a 12-year-old boy. With his sandy-colored hair and green eyes, he had a cheerful personality that endeared him to everyone around him. It was no surprise that he received many congratulations when he was appointed as the king’s successor.
Of course, there were some who weren’t pleased. Most of them were those who wished for the king to have a direct heir.
‘And so what?’
Even so, Milli was the successor chosen by the king. He decided to stand tall and carry himself with confidence, despite the discontented murmurs around him.
