Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 195
She knows Anne’s life hasn’t been easy. It’s not just because she’s the daughter of a lesser noble family. As they spent more time together, they became closer and shared their worries with each other.
‘My family can’t manage without me.’
Her family was full of greed, and their small estate and meager earnings were not enough to satisfy their desires. Anne gave everything she had, yet her family was never satisfied.
‘Can’t you just ignore them?’
‘How could I? It’s still the home I can return to.’
Anne would smile bitterly, but she couldn’t let go of her family. After that, she took a long leave to visit home.
‘What was her expression like when she returned?’
At the time, I thought I was being considerate by not asking her anything. But what if something had happened back then?
Come to think of it, since then, Anne hadn’t gone back home, even though she used to visit at least once a year. I should have noticed, but I didn’t. At that time, I was lost in the excitement of parties.
I had just made my debut and was smiling among people who praised me.
“You regret the past, don’t you?”
“…Anne.”
“Don’t regret it. Lady Luna, you’ve done nothing wrong. Just focus on the future. You have to achieve what you desire, right?”
“I don’t want to achieve it like this.”
“Really?”
Anne’s eyes widened as if surprised.
“But it’s already too late.”
Before she could finish speaking, Ramiel began to move toward Luna. She looked like an angel, but considering what she had done, she was nothing but a wicked witch.
Luna tried to turn and run. However, all of that remained just a thought. Her body wouldn’t move.
The window—if only she could get there.
“Don’t worry.”
Ramiel said with a smile.
“I’ll help you achieve what you want.”
After that, Luna lost consciousness.
“Lady Luna.”
Someone was waking Luna up. Her head felt strangely heavy, but she struggled to open her eyes.
Then, she saw the face of the person waking her, as she lay collapsed on the sofa. It was an ordinary-looking woman.
“Who are you?”
Luna asked in a daze.
“I am the new maid who joined recently. There were not enough people for this trip, therefore I came along.”
“I don’t remember you.”
“It is because I’ve been moving around very cautiously.”
“I see.”
Luna finally nodded.
“What’s the schedule for today?”
“There’s nothing in particular.”
That’s right. The older nobles didn’t include Luna in their conversations.
On top of that, Burt wasn’t seeing her, so there was no reason for her to have a schedule.
“It’s quite leisurely.”
“Still, since you’ve come all this way, why not meet the Saintess?”
“The Saintess?”
Why? For what reason? It would only cause her more heartache. When Luna asked again, the maid replied,
“You have a reason to meet her.”
A reason to meet her. Luna pondered.
“Yes, I do.”
“Then let’s have Anne submit the request.”
“Anne?”
It was only then that Luna noticed Anne standing in the corner of the room. She was smiling gently, as usual. The new maid surely had less authority as a servant, so why was she suggesting Anne? A brief question crossed her mind but quickly faded away.
“Wow, are all these people requesting to meet the Saintess?”
Lani looked at the pile of applications and grimaced.
“It looks like all the northern nobles applied. Our Saintess is already busy, so what could they possibly want?”
“I’m not that busy.”
Her workload had been reduced significantly due to her recovery, so she actually had a lot of free time.
“This is still plenty busy. You need more rest.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes.”
As they talked, Noah suddenly chimed in.
“Their intentions are obvious, aren’t they?”
“Obvious?”
Noah began sharing rumors he had picked up. The northern nobles were displeased with Burt stepping down from the throne. Since they couldn’t persuade Burt, their plan was to persuade the Saintess, who was connected to him.
Normally, Lani would have been the first to bring up such news.
“Lani, didn’t you know about this?”
“Well, I had a rough idea, but I didn’t think they’d be so blatant about it.”
Lani’s response was evasive, which felt suspicious. But since Lani wasn’t someone who would cause harm, Irene didn’t press further.
Though she had made mistakes in the past, Lani had already repented and was walking the right path. Lani was now someone Irene could trust. She believed there was a reason for Lani’s frequent absences and her busy schedule.
“Then I’ll just toss these out.”
“Is that okay?”
“They’d only spout nonsense if we entertained them. Why bother listening?”
Lani said firmly. Among the applications being swept away were Luna’s and Mili’s requests.
“I will go and officially reject them.”
Lani spoke firmly and then quickly left the room. Noah watched her retreating figure and said, almost as if making an excuse,
“She’s not planning anything bad.”
Given that even Noah was defending her, it seemed Lani wasn’t living the wrong way. Irene smiled and nodded in agreement.
After that, Lani continued to reject every application that came in. When complaints started to arise due to the constant rejections, she began to attach short explanations to them.
