Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 51
Irene turned her gaze from Lani to Aris.
She maintained her poise and confidence, a whole different kind of person from Lani.
But the person she needed now was not like that.
She preferred someone desperate, fanatical, and willing to risk their life, just like Lani now.
“I appreciate the intention, but I already have a maid.”
“Are you referring to that maid?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Indeed, sometimes we just need someone who is quite lacking.”
Garan did not insist further about the maid but stood his ground regarding the escort.
“There are still those who doubt the Saintess’s miracles and they cannot be trusted. Therefore, safety must be thoroughly ensured. I cannot allow any mishaps to occur on my land.”
His tone suggested he was not backing down.
As the conversation grew longer, Irene’s expression hardened slightly. She began to tap her fingers lightly on the back of her hand—a sign she was getting upset.
“Fine. However, I already have a knight protecting me, so please consult with him and then come back.”
She was referring to the knight assigned to her by Burt, the Paladin Sizu.
“We will do so.”
Theo bowed deeply in response.
“Knight Sizu is indeed formidable, but Knight Theo is not to be underestimated either. This will be a good opportunity.”
Garan said with a beaming smile, then handed a bundle of medicinal herbs to the maid, Lani, and left the room.
“I’ll be looking forward to that day.”
He was still a sly and unlikable man.
“What should we do with the herbs?”
“Throw them away.”
Irene answered without hesitation.
“Yes.”
Lani did not argue or add anything to her response.
The expensive herbs brought by Garan would be discarded in the trash as per Irene’s orders.
As the pilgrimage day approached, Burt became busier. And it was Garan who aggravated the situation.
“I want to be in charge of the escort.”
“The Saintess is heading to the eastern lands this time, so it’s only natural that we take charge of the escort, is that right?”
“Did the Saintess approve?”
“You two decide and come tell me, was her instruction.”
Garan shrugged nonchalantly in response.
He was annoying enough to drive away, but he was not one to back down easily. Moreover, his argument wasn’t wrong.
“But the escorts have already been decided.”
“We can just replace a few.”
“We can’t remove a paladin.”
“Then how about removing a knight from the north?”
“I’d rather not.”
A chill settled between the two.
“I think I’m being quite reasonable here.”
“Yet I’m inclined to disagree.”
Burt responded coolly.
“Isn’t it a bit too much to ride on the saint’s coattails like that?”
“Hardly.”
That’s not something the saint would condone. Burt lifted the corner of his mouth in a crooked smile.
“I wish you would make some agreements within reasonable bounds.”
“If I still refuse?”
A shadow began to spread behind Garan, and simultaneously, the temperature around them dropped sharply.
“Even if you show force, nothing will change. You’ve never beaten me before.”
“That was when we were children. How can you be so sure I haven’t changed??”
Garan licked his lips with his tongue.
“Then let’s put it to the test. Shall we fight?”
As Burt flicked his fingers, a loud boom resonated.
At the great rumble, Sizu and Theo, who were waiting outside, stood up and laid hands on their swords.
“It’s nothing; stand by.”
The atmosphere turned strange, but soon Burt’s calm voice was heard.
Hearing this, Sizu removed his hand from his sword, but Theo could not. Shortly after, Garan’s irritable voice rang out.
“It’s nothing.”
With that, the day’s incident came to an end.
People talked about the sudden loud noise, but the details of what happened remained unclear.
Both Burt and Garan kept their mouths shut. Who would dare to question the king?
However, the arrangements of the assigned escort forces gave some hints about the situation.
“So, the main escort forces will be the Paladin Order, and the rest will be from the knights of the north. We’ve also sent a few knights from the east, but you might find them hard to notice.”
When Sizu later came to Irene, he said with a smile,
“That’s right.”
