Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 68
She wasn’t breaking her promise to Burt. She was just curious about what the goddess’s words meant.
With that thought, Irene slipped into the forest, following the masked person.
Soon, they reached a horse that seemed to have been prepared in advance.
“I don’t know how to ride a horse.”
She was worried, but it turned out to be unnecessary. The horse lowered itself to help her mount.
“You don’t need to worry. Just hold the reins tightly.”
The strange voice made it impossible to guess its gender.
As she nodded, another masked figure appeared.
“Adlen!”
The figure approaching, calling her name, suddenly stopped mid-step.
“Hello.”
“What the hell!”
The second masked figure slapped her forehead with his hand.
“Why on earth did you bring the Saintess here? No, how did you bring her here?”
“I don’t know either. When I came to my senses, she was here with me.”
“What kind of answer is that? They’ll be after us. Leave the Saintess behind.”
“No way! This is a rare opportunity!”
“Adlen!”
“Eugene, without risk, there’s no future.”
The first masked figure spoke to the second with a serious tone.
“Stop parroting something you heard somewhere and send her back.”
Watching the two bicker was a bit annoying. There was no regard for her opinion in their argument.
“Excuse me.”
“Yes?”
“Yes!”
“I’m going with you.”
“Great!”
“No, wait a minute, Adlen. Why are you doing this? Isn’t it better to go back when they’re letting you?”
“Because I want to?”
At her words, the two masked figures paused briefly. Then the second masked figure let out a deep sigh.
“Is there any other reason you want to come along?”
In response, Irene pointed to her eyes with her hand.
As soon as the second masked figure saw this, he began to hit the first masked figure on the back.
“I told you! Not to cause trouble!”
“Ouch! It’s too late now! Let’s just hurry and escape! Now’s our chance while Luciel is going berserk!”
Eventually, the second masked figure let go of the first.
“I’ll handle the aftermath, so disappear quickly.”
Then they both rode off on their horses.
It was incredibly difficult, given it was her first time riding a horse, but she gritted her teeth and held on.
This was the second time she had seen a person with red eyes. She didn’t know why he was on the side of the attackers, but she wanted to find out more.
How long did they ride? When the horse finally stopped, Irene slid off it like well-kneaded dough.
“Are you okay?”
“I don’t know.”
“Geez, you’re pretty weak.”
Normally, she wouldn’t be this exhausted, but her stamina had been ruined by the torture she endured.
Irene chuckled as she sat on the ground.
“At least it seems no one is following us.”
“Is that a good thing?”
“It’s a relief. If the king or that fanatic Allen had followed us, we would have been in big trouble. Well, I would have been, not you.”
“I see. So where are we going now?”
“A hidden village.”
A hidden village?
Irene tilted her head in confusion. Could it be a place where people with cursed symbols live? That was the only thing that came to mind.
“Is it okay to reveal the hidden village to me?”
“You don’t seem like the type to blab about it. We’re almost there, so please stand up.”
Irene braced her trembling knees and stood up.
“If it’s too hard, should I carry you?”
Now her voice had changed. Unlike before, it was unmistakably a woman’s voice.
“It’s okay. I’ll try walking on my own.”
Irene followed the masked figure, pushing through the underbrush.
“By the way, I haven’t introduced myself, have I? My name is Adlen.”
“I heard earlier.”
“Right, of course. The one who was nagging a lot earlier is Eugene. He worries a lot.”
Adlen chattered as she led Irene. Halfway through, Irene’s strength gave out, and she had to be carried by Adlen.
When they finally arrived at a certain point, Adlen removed her mask.
She had a lively face, dotted with freckles.
“Let’s change clothes before we go in.”
Adlen retrieved a bundle she had hidden somewhere. Then she helped Irene change out of her conspicuous clothes and into plain ones.
“These clothes are too noticeable.”
“So, it’s a secret that I’m the Saintess.”
“Yes. So, what is Your Greatness’s name?”
“Irene.”
“Can I just call you Irene?”
“I don’t see why not.”
Has she ever talked this much recently?
Her body felt as heavy as waterlogged cotton, and her mouth was dry, but she didn’t feel bad. In fact, she felt a little excited.
“All done! Let’s go in together.”
The two of them entered a well-hidden cave.
They walked in, half-bent at the waist, and after a while, the cave widened. As they reached the end, a fairly large open area was revealed.
“Welcome to our village.”
And there it was—a proper village.
