Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 73
“Just what happened there, anyway?”
She wanted to answer his scornful words with her fists, but she couldn’t.
“Well, you weren’t there, so it’s understandable you wouldn’t know. Thinking it through must be hard with that head of yours.”
Eugene firmly grabbed Adlen’s trembling arm. She looked ready to lunge at Luciel.
“Well, fine. It’s not like I know everything either.”
Then why start a fight? They wanted to ask that question, but compared to Luciel, they were weak. Getting angry wouldn’t solve anything.
“You suspect something happened to them.”
Eugene confronted Luciel, speaking on behalf of the enraged Adlen.
“Exactly. And I think that ‘something’ is the disappearance of the Saintess.”
“That’s impossible. We failed in our attack, so how could the Saintess have disappeared?”
“Right? That’s exactly what’s strange. But coincidentally, someone went missing around that time.”
“Me?”
“Yes, Adlen. You weren’t there, right?”
Adlen felt a shiver run down her spine at Luciel’s words. She had indeed spirited the Saintess away.
“So, I’ll be taking some liberties.”
At Luciel’s snap, the people standing behind him began to scatter through the village.
“What do you think you’re doing?!”
“Just a simple procedure to ensure trust in the alliance. Don’t worry. As long as the Saintess isn’t here, nothing will happen to the villagers.”
“Do you know what the Saintess looks like?”
“Yes, I know her appearance. I had someone confirm it since she was a Saintess candidate.”
So that’s why they suspected.
Villagers bearing the same ominous symbol as the Saintess. No wonder there was suspicion.
Adlen glared at Luciel, thinking hard.
Irene is at Adlen’s house. Somehow, she needed to send someone to tell her to hide.
“Fine, search if you want!”
Bluffing was all she could do.
Time passed. Luciel’s men turned the village upside down but didn’t find who they were looking for.
“There’s no one who matches the description of the Saintess.”
“No one?”
“Yes, we searched everywhere, but the Saintess isn’t here.”
Saved. Adlen secretly sighed in relief.
“Hmm, was it a misunderstanding?”
Luciel squinted, looking around the village, then clicked his tongue.
“They say she’s not here. I’m glad we can solidify our alliance.”
“Solidify what, exactly?”
Adlen blurted out in disbelief, but Luciel acted as if he didn’t hear her.
“Well then, we’ll take our leave.”
“After causing all this commotion?”
“Ah, as an apology, we’ll provide extra food supplies for this month. Will that suffice?”
How infuriating and annoying. If only she could, she really wanted to hit him.
Adlen clenched her trembling fists and saw Luciel off. Only after he was far enough away did she let her body relax.
“Are you okay?”
“No, I’m not okay. Ugh, my head hurts.”
“Why did you pull such a stunt? But how did you manage not to get caught?”
“Right?”
“Why are you surprised? Didn’t you have a plan?”
“There was no time to prepare.”
Now it was time to check how Irene hadn’t been discovered.
Returning home with Eugene, Adlen first spotted Chess.
“Where’s Irene?”
“Over there.”
Chess pointed to a small grove nearby. It wasn’t large, but enough to hide a person.
The problem was that hiding there wouldn’t easily escape the heretics’ eyes.
Adlen entered the small grove and saw birds and animals huddled together.
Each one emitted a faint glow, and Irene was at the center of them.
“What kind of person did you bring? The animals surrounded her and she disappeared. Is something like that even possible?”
“Hmm.”
Adlen scratched her head.
“It’s possible.”
“How?”
“Actually, Irene is the Saintess.”
“What did you say?”
Chess tapped his ear with his hand.
“The Saintess.”
“What?”
“Saint-ess.”
“Why is the Saintess here? And she has red eyes and black hair!”
“You knew there were two Saintess candidates, right? And that one of them had ominous symbols.”
Sure, that much information had spread here. But no one thought the candidate with the ominous symbol would become the Saintess.
‘How could someone with an ominous symbol become the Saintess? It’s impossible. The goddess must have made her a candidate to deal with the ominous symbol once and for all.’
Even though it didn’t make sense, that’s what everyone thought.
