Irene Decided to Die - Chapter 98
Knock, knock, knock.
Irene woke to the sound of a rather loud knock.
“Who is it?”
“It’s Allen.”
“Just a moment.”
Irene pulled the bell cord to call Lani. Lani quickly arrived and helped her change out of her pajamas.
“What brings you here so early in the morning?”
It was earlier than the usual greeting time.
“There seems to have been some trouble at the palace overnight.”
“What kind of trouble?”
“We don’t know yet, but it seems we should be cautious.”
“Are they keeping something from us?”
“Yes, it seems they don’t want to tell us.”
Considering that the king hadn’t returned overnight, it made sense for there to be chaos.
“Let me know as soon as you find out.”
“I will. You look very tired.”
“I didn’t sleep well.”
In truth, she had hardly slept, but she kept that to herself.
“Lady Saintess.”
“Yes?”
“As a believer in the goddess, I have sworn to protect you, Lady Saintess.”
“Even if the saintess acts in any way?”
“Yes, no matter what. I believe there is a reason for everything, and I trust that your reasons are not evil.”
For a moment, Irene was speechless.
“So please call on me if anything happens next time.”
Allen knew Irene had been absent overnight.
‘How?’
He had been guarding the altar all night and showed no reaction to the double set up by Burt.
“I will if I can.”
It was the only response she could give.
“Thank you.”
Allen bowed again and stepped out of the room. Just when she thought she understood him, something puzzling would arise.
‘He’s a mysterious person.’
Fanatic Allen. True to his name, to him, the saintess was more important than the truth.
‘It’s not a bad thing.’
It would be even more helpful for her future revenge.
* * *
The palace was in an uproar. The king had not returned from his excursion, and only a few knights who accompanied him had come back.
However, the knights refused to explain why they had gone out. They only repeated that the king had disappeared.
“The king has disappeared? You need to provide more details so we can respond accordingly!”
The interrogator pounded his chest in frustration, but the knights’ responses were uniformly the same.
“We do not know the details. He suddenly ran toward the forest and disappeared.”
“Did you not follow him?”
“We could not catch up.”
Unconsciously, the interrogator clenched his teeth tightly.
“Do you call that an explanation? More importantly, you need to explain why he took you out in the first place! What happened?”
The knights exchanged glances and then fell silent again. It was maddening for the interrogator.
But the knights felt the same frustration.
They couldn’t exactly say that the king had taken them out to eliminate his brother, Guy, who was gradually building his power.
This was clearly an assassination attempt.
Now that the king had disappeared, they could all be blamed if things went wrong. Hence, the investigation was not progressing properly.
A search party was sent in the direction the knights mentioned, but no traces were found. Even when the search area was expanded, nothing turned up.
Given the situation, the position of the highest authority was suddenly vacant.
As a result, some of the collateral relatives, who had been suppressed by Garan, began to emerge.
Though Guy, a direct descendant, was present, they became ambitious knowing he bore ominous symbols.
“Surely, we’re better suited than someone who has been locked away for so long.”
“Of course, absolutely.”
They rationalized their desires, but Guy was no pushover. He used the people he had brought to his side to swiftly claim the throne.
The collateral relatives, who had been cautiously making their moves, were furious, but it was already too late.
The saintess, who had been bedridden after the rain-making ceremony, had blessed Guy.
This blessing for the king brought about another miracle in the eastern country.
In the face of this miracle, the collateral relatives had no choice but to remain silent and keep a low profile.
Moreover, Guy, who had ascended to the throne, seemed to be at least as capable as Garan, if not more so.
He masked his sharp features with a gentle smile, but the occasional coldness he displayed sent chills down people’s spines.
