Killing the Possessor - Chapter 16
It definitely looked strange, but I tried to play it off as naturally as possible.
“Oh, I just got a little dizzy.”
So, I quickly sat down. I figured sitting down would make me stand out less.
Though I had arrived a little early, I looked around carefully to see if any of Hongik Ingan’s agents had already arrived. However, no one stood out, other than the staff or regular customers.
“Maybe I should have come a bit later.”
Sitting and waiting quietly made me feel awkward and self-conscious. As I dawdled, the bartender from earlier gave me a pointed look, signaling that I should place my order.
“Uh, then a beer…”
Thud!
Before I could finish my sentence, a large beer mug slammed onto the table. Since I hadn’t chosen anything, it seemed the menu was standardized.
With a sigh, I picked up the drink that was as big as my face.
Well, there’s nothing to do, so I might as well drink. Thinking that, I took a sip of the yellow liquid.
“Ugh, what is this?”
I stared at the beer, which barely had any carbonation. Of course, considering that refrigeration wasn’t common here, expecting a lager to be aged at low temperatures was probably asking too much.
Still, isn’t beer supposed to have some carbonation?
“If I could show the continent the taste of carbonation, I could probably earn 50 trillion, right?”
I briefly entertained the absurd thought, then shook my head and gulped down the flat liquid. When would Hongik Ingan even show up?
“Aaaah!”
At that moment, a loud scream echoed, followed by a large body crashing onto the floor with a thud.
Startled, I looked toward the source of the sound, and a man standing on top of a table came into view.
“What… is that?”
Grrr.
The man, exuding an evil aura, looked far from normal. His pale skin and limbs that moved in unnatural, grotesque ways made him resemble a walking corpse. With a twisted face, he screamed out in fury.
“I’ll kill them all. I’ll kill everyone!”
Wow.
I stood there, mouth agape, cursing my bad luck.
How long have I been here, and already I met a demon?
“Graaah!”
As the man screamed, the malevolent energy shot up toward the ceiling. Instead of dissipating, it ricocheted off the walls, spreading out and constricting around the people.
“Ahhh!”
“Help me!”
Some people were being choked, while others had their limbs bound and couldn’t move. A few who failed to escape in time were seriously injured.
The tavern quickly descended into chaos, with terrifying screams echoing everywhere. My body froze as I numbly watched the black energy whip through the air.
Yeah, that’s a real demon.
A wicked, evil spirit that turns its host into a monster—completely different from a harmless possessor like me.
I never imagined I’d see such a horrific sight in 3D, let alone 4D. I used to avoid VR headsets even while playing games.
Though fear paralyzed my feet, my survival instinct kicked in, urging me to run. It would be too unfair to die like this without even renewing that damn residence permit.
“Hah!”
I darted toward the exit, avoiding the swirling energy.
Whoosh! A heavy stool whizzed by in front of me. If I had moved even a second later, I would’ve been struck mercilessly by that iron chair.
Swallowing hard, I glanced back at where the stool had come from, only to see the demon staring right at me. His eyes, now nothing but black, locked onto me, and the malevolent energy around him deepened.
“18.”
The number, which seemed to have an uncanny connection with me in this world, escaped my lips as I slowly began to back away.
Wait… I thought I had at least 15 more days to live.
“Hah, right. I couldn’t even finish the game.”
How could I break free from a reality worse than that?
Having already died once, I wondered if I could really die again. As the malevolent energy came rushing toward me, I closed my eyes in painful resignation.
Pop!
A burst of bright light erupted, and suddenly, a gust of wind blew through the air.
When I opened my eyes, I saw a figure standing in front of me, their cloak billowing in the wind.
“…Silver hair?”
