Killing the Possessor - Chapter 19
Chapter 1 Ending. The Beginning of the Trap
If you were to ask what the hottest topic in the capital is right now, the answer would undoubtedly be the sudden breakup between Prince Wainer and Camilli Mute.
The second prince, known for his long-standing, adorable relationship with the eldest daughter of the Mute family, has recently, tragically, parted ways with her. The reason remains unclear, but as Camilli Mute had been treated almost like a princess for a long time, the fallout was bound to be significant.
This news, along with gossip, has not only dominated yellow journalism but also surfaced in the elegant salons of the nobility. Even reputable news outlets began to cover it.
However, the real reason for the breakup has been hard to uncover. The imperial family has remained silent, as has the count’s daughter. With both parties keeping their lips sealed, the only thing left was rampant speculation.
“It’s clear that the prince must have given up. Honestly, she’s not someone whose personality is easy to match.”
The prince had always been known for his deep, pure love, which led most people to direct their suspicions at the daughter of the Mute family for the breakup.
Some suggested that the prince, unable to bear it any longer, had ended things, while others speculated that Camilli, who was well past the usual marriageable age, had been seeking another suitor while delaying the imperial marriage.
As time passed, the prevailing theory became that it was Camilli Mute who had ended the relationship. Unlike her usual composed self, the prince had been seen drowning his sorrows in alcohol, his life becoming a blur of drunken stupors.
Then came the event that made it undeniable: the breakup had not been amicable, as it was so publicly revealed.
Smack.
With the distinct sound of a slap echoing, the music in the ballroom came to an abrupt halt.
Camilli Mute’s bold action stunned everyone in the room, yet she remained unshaken, almost as if she was the one in control, as if she was not the one to leave.
In the end, it was Prince Wainer who left the place first, not the count’s daughter.
And there, watching from a distance, was Ren. He had been silently observing Camilli Mute the entire time.
“Sir Ren Abyss.”
The Count’s daughter, having downed several strong drinks, was seen stepping out onto the balcony alone, which prompted him to follow her.
The townhouse where the ball had been held was built in the rare ancient Tanuel architectural style. Its railings were low, and Ren couldn’t help but feel uneasy about it.
He had planned to keep an eye on her, making sure she wouldn’t stumble from the alcohol. Of course, he also wanted to seize the opportunity to have a word with her—about something that had happened fifteen years ago, something only she and he knew.
But he hadn’t expected things to unfold the way they did. The last thing he had expected was for the drunken lady to suddenly grab him by the collar and kiss him.
“Miss Camilli.”
Even someone like him, who rarely lost his composure, couldn’t stay entirely calm this time. But with her half-lidded eyes, Camilli, her lips as red as her hair, smirked and asked in a mocking tone.
“Isn’t this what you wanted?”
“You’ve got it wrong. I—”
“Liar. You’ve been watching me all along, haven’t you? For a long time.”
Since it was true, he had no intention of denying it. However, his reasoning was too clear to not do this inappropriate action with someone drunk. He wasn’t about to get involved with a woman who had just broken up with a prince, especially not to see his name appear in the gossip columns.
“I don’t think you’re so bad.”
“…”
“I don’t know why you’re working for the Public Security Bureau, but your family is good, and you’ve got a nice appearance. Someone like you wouldn’t be looked down on by others.”
Her transparent calculation showed as she slowly ran her fingers across his cheek.
“I’ve had my share of drinks for a few days, and I realized, the pain of a breakup isn’t something you can drown in alcohol.”
“…”
“So I’ve made up my mind. I’ll erase it with a new love.”
With no shame at all, she smiled confidently and made her suggestion.
“So, let’s be together. It’d be even better if we could just roll around together while we’re at it.”
Ren had seen all sorts of things while working for the Public Security Bureau, but this was such a provocative statement that it left him momentarily speechless.
Ren eventually let out a laugh, shaking off his surprise.
