I stared at the man who had just said what I was thinking. The words “So are you” almost came out of my mouth, but I held back.

I hadn’t even seen Father Vice yet.

“The sun will be setting soon. I’ll escort you.”

“Eh? No, I’m fine…”

“As you know, this area is a dangerous one, so it’s better to be cautious.”

When Ren said ‘dangerous area,’ he wasn’t just talking about places with bad security. In this world, where evil spirits roamed, there were areas with bad energy and gloomy atmospheres, often inhabited by people of lower status and income.

The neighborhood with the orphanage was no exception, as reports of evil spirits were frequent. So, as someone from Public Security and a gentleman, his suggestion made sense.

The problem was…

“Ah, that’s…”

You’re going to interrogate me while escorting me, aren’t you?

Considering I had no idea how the possessor incident at the palace had been viewed by others, being alone with him felt extremely uncomfortable.

One wrong word and I would definitely be summoned to the interrogation room. And the Public Security Department’s interrogation room had a reputation for being terrifying, with rumors that even distant relatives would have to recount the meal they last ate.

Sure, I was scared of evil spirits, but the most terrifying thing for a possessor was, without a doubt, a Public Security officer.

Just as I was trying to find a way to avoid it, a familiar sight caught my attention.

“Ah! Wait a moment.”

Although I only saw his back, the messy hair and untidy clothing were strikingly similar to Tommy’s appearance from earlier.

The strange thing was that he was staggering as if he had been drinking, but since a child wouldn’t be able to get alcohol, I wondered if he was sick or hurt. I began to worry that he might have been physically hurt.

“I’ll just check on that kid real quick.”

I quickly found a good excuse to check on Tommy’s condition, and without waiting for a response, I turned around. The child, who had been walking slowly, was heading toward what looked like a warehouse.

“Tommy!”

I called out loudly, but he didn’t seem to hear me. I sighed and quickened my pace. The high heels I was wearing made running quite uncomfortable.

“Tommy, why…”

The place I thought was a warehouse turned out to be an entrance to a basement when I opened the door. The dim, dark space made it hard to make out anything around me, and just as I hesitated,

“Ah!”

Crash!

An unknown force shoved me forward, and the door behind me slammed shut.

[Welcome to the playfield.]

“…Again?”

I had a bad feeling about this.

I didn’t remember this event, but it seemed like one of the chapters.

The problem was that the door behind me was already shut. This meant…

“It’s not opening!”

As expected, I was trapped again, and I let out a pitiful cry. To be locked in such a creepy place where almost no light came in!

Also, the term ‘playfield’ meant that an evil spirit was about to appear. Could it be that Tommy was possessed by an evil spirit?

Regardless of the situation, it seemed like I needed to gather clues about the evil spirit in order to escape, just like last time. If I succeeded in purifying it, the door would probably open.

But to do that, I had to go down into the basement.

“Don’t… don’t panic. I was a scout too, once.”

Although it was from my clueless elementary school days, I muttered to myself to boost my courage.

The scene of the stairs leading down felt like something from hell, creating a mood that could make even the strongest man faint.

“To-To-Tommy…”

I cautiously stepped down the stairs, trembling so much that I wondered if I’d ever stuttered this much in my life. But as I descended, the only sound I heard, aside from the creaking of the wooden steps, was complete silence.

“Teacher, I’m scared…”

If the hunt started in a place this hard to see, I’d have no chance of survival.

I prayed for just a little more time before the hunt started, and when I reached the bottom of the stairs,

[The evil spirit ‘???’ has begun its hunt.]

[User’s status temporarily converted to ‘Player’.]

“I’m going crazy.”

The death flag was mercilessly triggered.
