Chapter 43.2

I muttered, recalling Damian drinking the poisoned wine without hesitation. Building a resistance to poison wasn’t uncommon among royalty and nobles. However, as far as I knew, Damian was a commoner. Though there were rumors he was the illegitimate son of a nobleman, they were just rumors, nothing concrete.

At least according to my investigation, he’s definitely a commoner.

To build poison resistance, one had to consistently ingest poison and have immediate access to treatment in case of life-threatening situations. Therefore, it was rare for a commoner to develop such a resistance.

Poison resistance and difficulty in healing might be connected.

There’s less information on Damian than others.

The information I had gathered on Damian Ditronil was utterly ordinary. The problem was that I hadn’t been able to uncover anything about his childhood. The same went for Ronen.

The earliest information I had on Damian was that he was adopted by an ordinary elderly couple at seventeen, and they died shortly after. He then started working as a mercenary to make a living.

I had wondered why there was such a lack of information before that time, but… Seeing him with the Crown Prince, I understood. Damian suddenly appeared in society two years ago, and his past remained shrouded in mystery. The Crown Prince probably erased information about Damian Ditronil.

“This won’t be easy.”

If the Crown Prince was involved, it would be difficult to find any more information about Damian. I suddenly remembered that I had re-commissioned Ronen to investigate Damian Ditronil.

“What won’t be easy?”

Damian’s voice suddenly came from above. Looking up, I saw him looking down at me. He seemed to have just finished his treatment, his shirt practically hanging off him.

Damian.

When did he get here? He was with the Crown Prince just a moment ago.

Every time he moved, his open shirt revealed his toned chest. It was hard to look him straight in the eye.

“…You should button your shirt.”

“The buttons came off; it won’t close.”

Damian replied with a grin. He claimed he had no choice but to leave his shirt open because of the missing buttons.

“…Buttons.”

I murmured softly. I was the one who undid Damian’s shirt buttons. But I hadn’t been that rough. Had they really come off?

The memory was hazy, so I couldn’t say anything more.

…Wouldn’t it be better to change your clothes?

They said there aren’t any clothes prepared right now.

Given the location, there would likely be clothes prepared for emergencies. However, the building had partially collapsed due to the monster, and finding clothes in the current situation probably wasn’t easy.

I bit my lip. Seeing his exposed chest made me keep turning my head away.

Thankfully, it’s healed cleanly.

Damian came and sat to my left.

“It wasn’t a serious injury to begin with.”

He had overreacted. But I had done the same. I checked Damian’s hand and shoulder. Thankfully, there were no scars.

Every time Damian moved, his shirt gaped open, and his chest caught my eye again—toned and muscular, unlike how it appeared when clothed.

I abruptly turned my head. Looking straight ahead, I saw Ricardo talking to the Crown Prince. He was bowing to the Crown Prince, his expression somber.

Knowing Ricardo’s personality, he was likely apologizing for failing to protect Bashar.

“He fell while saving another knight, right?”

Damian was also looking at Ricardo, following my gaze.

“…Yes. My brother caused trouble.”

“Meaning Div’s skills are lacking.”

Damian gave a cynical laugh. He sat with his hand propped behind him and one leg crossed over the other. I tried to ignore the skin visible through his open shirt and looked at him.

“Are you alright?”

“As I said, it wasn’t serious.”

“They said the pain might linger for a few days.”

“I’m used to it, so it’s fine.”

He was used to being injured and the pain that followed. I thought about Damian’s background again. Was he talking about his time as a mercenary? Or was he still…

“I’m more worried about you. You’re not used to it, are you, Amelia?”

His gaze fell on my left arm. Damian kept fussing over my injury, even though it was completely healed without a trace.

“I can’t believe this happened while I was away.”

I watched Damian as he straightened up, looking genuinely distressed. Our eyes met, and he tilted his head.

Without thinking, I voiced the thoughts I had been organizing in my mind.

“…Did you intentionally arrive late today?”

“Hmm?”

“To make it easier for Pazl to act?”

Today’s schedule presented a decent opportunity for Pazl, who had been waiting for the right moment. The news of Damian, one of the guests, being late must have been a welcome bonus for him as he debated whether to execute his plan. The presence of outsiders had disrupted the usual atmosphere of the princes’ mansion. While security was tight as always, there was an undeniable air of disorder. Furthermore, Damian’s absence caused the princes to separate and spend their time apart, which must have been an irresistible opportunity for Fazil.

But what if all of this was planned from the beginning?

The Crown Prince, Haroon, and Damian were likely involved. Judging by Ray’s reaction, she probably knew too, along with some of the knights…

“And you used me, while suspecting me at the same time.”

I was a pawn, a catalyst to set Pazl in motion. I relayed my organized thoughts to Damian.
