Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who's the Witch of Fate’s Great Call - Chapter 44
As Vylon calmly assessed the situation, his hand clenched tightly. He was in a foul mood.
Was it because a witch had suddenly appeared?
Of course, that was part of the reason. But the main reason was…
Ah, she had never run into my arms like that.
“Stop clinging, Kalynia.”
Catherine clicked her tongue and pushed her sister’s face away with one hand.
Even as her face was squashed, Kalynia didn’t let go.
“No! I won’t let go!”
She was simply thrilled to see her sister again after so long. She hadn’t noticed the look her husband was giving from behind them.
“Kalynia.”
Eventually, Vylon approached the two, interjecting himself. When he asked for an introduction, Kalynia finally remembered his presence.
“This is my sixth sister, Catherine. Catherine, this is, uh, well, the King of the Snow Kingdom…”
“The King of the Snow Kingdom, Vylon. Kalynia’s husband, as well.”
Since Kalynia was hesitating on how to introduce him, Vylon finished her sentence.
“Huuuusband?”
Catherine stretched the word out, horrified.
She had heard rumors in the village, but seeing it with her own eyes sent chills down her spine. She glared at Kalynia, demanding with her eyes if what she’d just heard was true. Kalynia fidgeted with her hands, hesitating.
“Well, one thing led to another, and we ended up married.”
Kalynia laughed awkwardly.
“Kalynia, what were you thinking?”
“Well, you see…”
“Don’t tell me, just because this guy said he loved you, you were fooled into making him potions?”
Catherine glanced around the room and asked, her tone skeptical. Kalynia, flustered, frantically shook her hands, denying it, but Catherine wasn’t convinced.
“You’ve always been so naïve. You’re easy to deceive.”
“That’s rude! I’m not the one who was fooled—he was! He’s so head over heels that he doesn’t even realize I’m planning to steal the mirror and run away!”
“…Did you mean to say that in front of him?”
Catherine frowned, pointing out her slip.
Kalynia’s mind went blank with regret. Catherine, being the sister closest in age, was the one she’d fought with most growing up. They often argued over trivial matters and said ridiculous things to each other.
That old habit had come out, and she’d blurted out her real thoughts without realizing it. But it wasn’t like it wasn’t true—it was her original plan, after all.
If she planned to run away, she might as well do it now. Catherine said she’d help. Did she know where the mirror was?
“Wait, Catherine. Don’t make things more complicated! Vylon will misunderstand!”
“What do you mean, ‘misunderstand’? Weren’t you planning to run away?”
If you don’t know where the mirror is, just give up on it already.
Catherine grabbed Kalynia’s arm and tried to pull her toward the window.
Then Vylon grabbed Kalynia’s other hand.
“Kalynia, what about the promise to give me a child? Are you really planning to run from me?”
“N-No, Vylon, wait, I…”
“Were you really thinking of betraying me?”
“No, no, I wasn’t… That’s not it…!”
Kalynia tried to explain with a desperate expression.
“What’s going on here?”
Catherine raised her hands, shrugging in confusion. She had thought the title of queen was just a formality and that the king was keeping her sister captive, forcing her to make potions.
But as she watched, the way they looked at each other was too affectionate. Vylon, watching Kalynia’s tearful expression, suddenly pulled her into his arms.
“I’m sorry, Witch, but I can’t let you take Kalynia.”
Catherine’s face twisted at his firm, warning tone.
“If you plan to get in my way, then I’ll face you. Whether you’re the king of humans or whatever, I’m not afraid.”
“Kalynia is my wife. I won’t just stand by and let you abduct her.”
“Abduct?”
The tension between the two was like sparks flying. Startled, Kalynia stood between them, waving her hands.
“No, Catherine! Don’t fight! Vylon, you wait too! Stop this!”
Kalynia was in complete disarray. She couldn’t shake the thought that this conflict was her fault, because of her slip.
“Kalynia, say it clearly. Did you marry this man willingly?”
