Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who's the Witch of Fate’s Great Call - Chapter 45
Catherine’s question left Kalynia momentarily speechless.
Did she marry him willingly? Of course not. She’d chosen marriage over death, and that was all.
“If there’s something keeping you from running, tell me. I’ll help you.”
“I don’t like how you’re implying I’ve chained my wife down.”
“Shut up, human. Kalynia, if my power isn’t enough, I’ll call our other sisters. We’ll break any restrictions and tear that human to shreds.”
Catherine made a reassuring yet fearsome statement.
Having her sisters’ support felt dependable. It would have been better if she had met Catherine sooner and explained the situation.
But she didn’t know when it started—Kalynia no longer felt like her life was threatened here. Instead, by Vylon’s side, she felt…
“No! Don’t tear him apart! Catherine, I’m doing better than you think. Please tell the others that.”
She shouted her reassurance with a bit too much desperation. Catherine continued to look at her suspiciously, glancing back and forth between Vylon and Kalynia.
While her sister was breaking into a nervous sweat, Vylon remained glued to her side, glaring at Catherine. Catherine could feel his possessiveness, as if he would never let anyone take her from him.
“I don’t understand your situation at all. But how am I supposed to explain to our older sisters that you’re doing well?”
If she told them Kalynia had gotten married and that her relationship with her husband seemed… unusual, the sisters wouldn’t be less worried—they’d be furious.
Then they’d insist on coming here immediately to rescue their youngest.
“If you want them to understand, go back and explain it to them yourself.”
“In person?”
Kalynia rolled her eyes, considering it. Catherine’s words made sense. Catherine tended to interpret situations with a skewed perspective, especially when explaining things.
If she relied on her, the sisters might think their youngest was being mistreated in the Snow Kingdom. It would be better for her to go and explain everything gradually. Having reached a conclusion, Kalynia turned to Vylon.
“Vylon, I’ll be back soon.”
Vylon grinned at her, then wrapped an arm tightly around her waist, nearly squeezing the air out of her.
“I’m not letting you go.”
“It won’t take long. Just a moment—don’t hold so tight! Ow, ow!”
At her pained cry, Vylon loosened his grip slightly.
“It’ll just be a short trip.”
“No.”
“Do you not trust me?”
“Even if I trust you, I don’t trust that your sisters will let you come back.”
Vylon looked at her with sad eyes. Kalynia, seeing this expression for the first time, momentarily forgot she was even annoyed.
Sensing her hesitation, Vylon didn’t miss the opportunity.
“Kalynia, I can’t be without you.”
“Vylon, but my sisters are worried…”
“Please.”
Catherine, who had been watching with her arms crossed, grimaced.
“Why do I feel like the villain here, when I’m just running an errand?”
She was baffled by the situation. How did her younger sister end up married to a human king and acting so affectionate with him?
Moreover, he wasn’t just any human man. He was the grandson of Snow White, an enemy of the Grand Witch Grimdelwald, whom Kalynia deeply respected.
“If Snow White is dead, I’ll take revenge on her descendants instead! I’ll bring back the mirror too!”
Kalynia had declared this more than once.
But instead of revenge, she ended up… married?
‘What on earth is she doing?’
Catherine was at a loss. Even if her plan was to make Vylon fall for her and then betray him, it still didn’t add up.
“Kalynia, do you really want to leave me forever? Would you be okay with never seeing my face again?”
“No, Vylon. I don’t mean I want to leave forever.”
If she really wanted to betray him, she should say so, and then work with Catherine to overthrow the king and take the mirror or whatever else they needed.
But instead, she was completely focused on comforting a sorrowful Vylon.
“You promised you wouldn’t leave me.”
The sadness in Vylon’s voice suddenly shifted. He turned his gaze to Catherine with a barely suppressed anger.
A good actor, this man.
Noticing his changed demeanor, Catherine suspected he might have yet another face he showed her sister when they were alone.
Though her stance was to let Kalynia live independently as an adult, she was, after all, still her sister. As her elder, she felt responsible, especially if her sister might be in danger.
“I can’t go back empty-handed.”
When Catherine insisted she was taking Kalynia back with her, Vylon’s brow furrowed for a moment. But he quickly composed himself and made her an offer.
“Well then, to my wife’s sister, a witch fond of entering through windows, why not stay in this country for a while?”
By observing Kalynia’s daily life, she could see how well she was living. Vylon was confident as he spoke.
