Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who's the Witch of Fate’s Great Call - Chapter 46
Catherine was annoyed, wondering why she had to go through such a bothersome task, but in the end, she accepted. If she tried to take her sister away, that wretched man would stop her, and if she just left her here, she’d feel uneasy. There was no better solution.
“Fine. I’ll keep a close watch with my own eyes. But remember, I’m not as soft as Kalynia.”
And so, Catherine, the flying witch, was officially welcomed as a guest of the Snow Kingdom.
Even as the Queen’s sister, she was still a witch. She didn’t expect to receive particularly warm treatment.
However, Vylon provided her with an excellent guest room and even assigned a handmaid to attend to her.
“If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to let me know!”
The maid was a fairly young girl with an extremely cheerful personality. Even if Catherine said she didn’t need anything, the maid stayed close, ready to provide anything that might be needed.
Is she here to keep an eye on me?
At first, Catherine was suspicious, but the girl gradually revealed her curiosity and started asking her all sorts of questions.
“The Queen told us that you, Witch Catherine, can fly through the sky. What does it feel like to soar freely like a bird?”
Wasn’t the law of the human world that anyone associated with a witch would be punished? But this young maid acted as if she knew nothing of the sort.
“Oh, I wish I’d been born a witch!”
She spoke without fear, blurting out something that could get her in serious trouble. Maybe if they were in a remote village far from the king’s ears, but this was the castle, and she worked here. Yet, she was completely unguarded.
“If I’d been born a witch, I would’ve had so much more fun in life.”
The most surprising thing was the reaction of the other people around.
“Me too. Ah, I’m so jealous of Witch Catherine and Her Majesty the Queen.”
Several others nodded in agreement. In this castle, people seemed friendly towards Kalynia and the witches.
Of course, not everyone was like that. There were still people who watched Catherine from a distance and whispered among themselves.
But no one, not a single soldier, tried to capture her and drag her to the gallows just for being a witch.
“Isn’t it strange to hunt witches when the queen herself is one?”
When she asked Vylon how the people of this country could be this way, his answer was simple. Upon hearing it, it seemed obvious—but then what about Grimdelwald?
She’d heard that, even as queen, Grimdelwald had to hide the fact that she was a witch her entire life. Despite her beautiful appearance, if her husband had discovered she was a witch, he would have surely turned against her.
In fact, Grimdelwald’s husband had led the charge to execute her alongside Snow White.
‘It doesn’t make sense.’
Why weren’t they afraid of witches? Why didn’t they want to hunt them? She’d heard that hunting was one of the king’s hobbies.
When Catherine thought of hunting, what came to mind was witch hunts, the hateful pastime that had plagued her life.
Humans always viewed witches as evil, something to be eradicated from the world.
Then why…
“Thanks to the Queen, my father, who had been bedridden with a bad back, is up and about! He’s so healthy now that he gets into daily battles with our chickens over the eggs!”
“My illness got better thanks to the Queen.”
All thanks to the Queen. All thanks to the Queen.
Kalynia’s talent was shining brightly in this country. She was indeed good at making potions—Catherine couldn’t deny that. They were so effective that it was sometimes a problem.
How many times had they packed up and fled because someone suspected her potions were suspicious witchcraft? They’d lost count of the nights they spent escaping.
“You’re supposed to make the potions a little less effective!”
“If they don’t work well, people don’t get better. What am I supposed to do?”
Every time they fled, Catherine scolded Kalynia. But Kalynia fought back, saying there was no point in making potions if they didn’t actually heal people.
What did it matter if humans got better or not? It was better for her if the detestable humans stayed sick.
“You’re too soft to become a Grand Witch.”
She would never become one. With her kind nature, she’d die long before achieving any great, evil feats.
Every time Catherine said that, her sister would protest vehemently that she wasn’t soft at all.
But now, looking at the current situation, Catherine felt like everything she’d thought was wrong. Seeing people grateful to the Witch Queen, smiling at her—even at herself—something inside Catherine began to shift.
Perhaps Kalynia was a great witch who was fated to change people.
