My Contract Husband Resembles the Male Protagonist - Chapter 2
After two weeks of continuous carriage travel, I finally arrived in Grunwald.
The land was vast, but the population was sparse, making Grunwald much quieter than I had thought.
Among all the villages I had wandered, it was the quietest and had the largest expanse of land.
This place was located at the southernmost region of the empire. The land was extensive, but the soil was arid, and the lack of job opportunities for young people had caused a unique aging population issue.
“It looks like it’s going to rain soon.”
I gazed at the cloudy sky.
“The address… it’s over there.”
The note I had received had the address written on it.
Grunwald had a sparse population, so there was plenty of space between houses.
I made my way to the place introduced by the real estate agent and assistant to the Count.
“Is this it?”
A modest, pale yellow brick house built on a low hill.”
It was a small, well-furnished, charming house with a white fence and a noticeable red roof.
If you counted the attic, it would be about three floors, and its size seemed perfect for two people to live comfortably.
“But they mentioned there was something unusual about this house,”
I recall when the house was introduced to me, I was told that the house had a certain peculiarity. But since this was the only house available for immediate occupancy, I had no choice but to accept it.
“I thought it might be a strange house when they said it had something unusual, but this is exceptionally nice.”
I initially expected it to be more of an old, decrepit place or even a haunted mansion, but it turned out to be a beautiful house that could easily compete with its neighboring homes.
I stood in front of the door, dragging the heavy trunk.
“The key is in the mailbox,” they had mentioned
I reached into the old mailbox next to the tree and found a small key.
Creak!
At that moment, thunder rumbled as if tearing through the sky.
I quickly entered the house and locked the door.
“Wow…! And all the furniture is here!”
They called it an unusual house, but it wasn’t unusual at all. In fact, it was furnished with everything you could need: sofas, a table, chairs, and more.
The furniture was sparkling, without a trace of wear and tear.
“Who left this place in such a hurry?”
It felt like they had left behind almost all of their belongings.
I cautiously sat down on the sofa and then sprawled out.
“Just missing some firewood,” I noticed.
The house had a fireplace, and the only thing lacking was wood.
Was this a truly haunted house?
Or was there some other reason why this house was on the market for half the usual rent?
“This house has a few minor issues, but living here shouldn’t be a problem, right…??”
If it meant a well-furnished house like this, I could overlook a few problems, such as the presence of insects or even the fact that someone had died here.
Above all, it was a hidden gem perfect for avoiding the Emperor’s gaze.
I looked at the stairs while lying down.
The wooden stairs leading up to the second floor were also well-maintained.
“The caretaker must have done a great job,” I thought.
The condition was quite satisfying, much better than the twenty houses I had stayed in while wandering.
Now, all that remains is for the Emperor to hurry up and get married…
“Why are you waiting for me?”
There must be some reason.
In the “original work” I transmigrated into, the male protagonist, who is the Emperor, and I were supposed to get married.
However, in the original story, our relationship was a political marriage without love.
According to the original plot, I was destined to die because of my marriage to the Emperor.
I thought that if I held out long enough, the Emperor would find another noble family willing to follow his words and proceed with a marriage arrangement.
But that didn’t happen, and for some unknown reason, he waited for me, the runaway bride, for three years.
What on earth could be the reason the Emperor is waiting just for me?
Thunder rumbled once again.
This time, along with a warm flash of lightning that made everything white.
“I should get some firewood before the rain intensifies. The storage shed must be at the back; shall I go check it out?”
However, as soon as I opened the door…
“Yikes!”
Suddenly, something jumped out.
“It’s not just a large bug!!!! It’s… a man…?”
I doubted my eyes.
Why was a man I had never seen before suddenly collapsing in front of my house?
