My Contract Husband Resembles the Male Protagonist - Chapter 44
Dale seemed not to be home yet.
‘Not in his room, either…?’
This might be an opportunity.
A chance to see Dale’s room.
It’s not that I wanted to snoop around Dale’s room behind his back.
It’s all about the ring.
Though it’s unlikely my ring rolled into Dale’s room, if it got caught on something and was carried there, it might be possible.
I’ve searched even the lord’s office but never Dale’s room.
‘Should I open it?’
But there was a clause in the contract.
To respect each other’s privacy.
‘But this is an emergency that overrides everything, sorry, Dale.’
Slyly, I grabbed the doorknob and turned it gently.
“Miss Enya?”
“…!”
Then I heard Dale’s voice.
He was standing behind me, having arrived at some point.
“You scared me! Did you just get back? You’re early today, aren’t you?”
“Yes. I felt bad for always being late, Miss Enya.”
Dale looked at me with a warm smile.
“But why are you in my room… Did you need something from me?”
“Eh? What do you mean? This?”
I smoothly let go of the doorknob and hid my hands behind my back.
“I thought a bug entered Dale’s room, wondering whether to catch it or not. A hornet flew by but disappeared!”
“It’s dangerous. I’ll take care of it.”
“Ah…! Will you? That seems like a good idea. Right.”
I stepped away from the door, smiling.
“Hahaha, Dale, you’re such an adult. Wow, that’s impressive. Then, please take care of it!”
Thud!
The brooch I had moved into my pocket fell to the floor.
“Kyaa!”
I swiftly picked up the brooch and hid it tightly in my embrace.
“Enya?”
Dale looked at me with wide eyes.
“It seems like you dropped something. Are you okay?”
“Ah! It’s nothing! It’s just, it’s just something. Haha, look at me being all scatterbrained…!”
I quickly stepped away from Dale.
He seemed to look at me strangely, but it was better than being caught with this grotesque brooch.
“…These days.”
Dale’s voice deepened.
“It seems like you’re hiding a lot from me, Miss Enya.”
He couldn’t hide a sullen look on his handsome face and came closer to me, slightly furrowing his brows.
“I smell perfume today.”
“Ah? Really? I do wear it usually.”
“You seem to have put on makeup too.”
Right. I had demonstrated it myself for Sophia’s lesson.
Realizing I had been searching for the ring as soon as I got home, I hadn’t even washed up yet.
Dale, gazing at me intently, seemed increasingly troubled.
“What happened?”
“Nothing happened?”
Dale can be inconveniently perceptive.
Did he realize that my reason for sneaking into his room wasn’t actually about an insect?
His expression seemed to suggest as much.
That’s a look of suspicion.
“Really, I just got back and haven’t done anything yet.”
“…Just now?”
Dale’s expression worsened.
“…It’s quite late now.”
“Yes? That’s right.”
“But you just got in.”
Why does his expression keep getting worse?
He seemed upset enough for me to want a reason, or perhaps even sad.
“…I see.”
Dale nodded with a subdued expression.
“Whatever Miss Enya does outside, or how late she returns home, it’s not my place to interfere.”
“Yes, yes, exactly that.”
I reflexively responded with whatever came to mind. I had to leave quickly.
“But, Miss Enya.”
Dale caught me again as I sneakily tried to escape.
“Why, what is it?”
I looked up at him, his expression looked serious.
“Even though it’s just a contractual relationship, I’d appreciate it if you could share with me if you’re in any trouble.”
“I will.”
I nodded for the moment.
“Thank you for worrying about me! I’ll go up first and sleep. Goodnight!”
I dashed upstairs.
So I failed to notice what thoughts he might have been having as he watched me leave.
