Evelia Locke was someone who would do anything to survive. Theft and fraud were commonplace for her, and if necessary, she wouldn’t hesitate to kill.

From the moment she was born, the world had been hostile toward Evelia Locke, but she refused to lose. Her pride wouldn’t allow humiliation. That was why she never chose a life of being worked like a slave, nor to be pinned beneath a filthy man.

“Eve, you’re going to get yourself into big trouble one day.”

Back when they were young, scouring trash and wandering the streets together, her friend had since become a merchant’s mistress.

Now, fluttering her lashes at a fat, nearly bursting bald man to get money out of him, the friend treated Evelia Locke to a meal — grumbling all the while, but clearly glad to see her after such a long time.

“I won’t die.”

“No one wants to die, you know.”

“I’ll survive. No matter what.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m just saying — be careful.”

A gloved hand, clad in fine lace, waved lightly through the air. Evelia, who had shaved off her eye-catching blonde hair before going out, stared at the hand with disinterest before burying her face back into her plate.

“How long are you staying in Lovent?”

“Leaving later today.”

“Already? Why?”

“Killed some bastard who wouldn’t leave me alone. Gotta run before they catch on.”

“Haah…”

Her friend sighed, opened her small handbag, and held out a tiny pendant. Evelia’s eyes widened at the sight of the sparkling golden charm.

“What’s this?”

“If you do get caught, give it to the guard and get out.”

Of course, Evelia didn’t refuse. She took the pendant without hesitation, and her friend looked at her with a mix of pity and fondness.

“This clears my debt to you, okay?”

“When were you ever in debt to me?”

Evelia went right back to chewing her chunk of meat. Her friend just smiled. Whatever the case, Evelia didn’t really care.

“Eve, seriously — be careful.”

“Mm.”

Evelia, long used to dancing along the edge of death, let her friend’s worry roll off her ears like nothing.

At that moment, a clattering sound echoed from somewhere. Evelia, with a fork still in her mouth, flicked her eyes sharply.

The approaching footsteps weren’t just one or two. Evelia glanced regretfully at her friend’s untouched food before speaking.

“Getting involved with a murderer would be bad for you, right?”

“Of course it would!”

“Then get going.”

As Evelia added this calmly, her friend’s mouth fell open. Whether she reacted or not, Evelia picked up the soup bowl and drank straight from it. The sound of her pursuers grew louder.

“Eve.”

Even at the worried call, Evelia shook her head.

“You said bribing the guards would work.”

“Still…”

“Or I’ll just kill them all and run. So stop worrying and go.”

Evelia dropped that chilling line, set the empty soup bowl down, and stabbed another chunk of meat. Her friend left hurriedly after placing money for the meal on the table.

The footsteps came closer and closer.

The sound of approaching footsteps wasn’t the heavy clatter of armed guards hunting a murder suspect. It was light, brisk, and almost cheerful. Familiar, even.

Evelia knew full well she should be running, not leisurely sitting around eating. But she remained at the table, quiet, almost like she was waiting for someone.

No, that wasn’t it. She wasn’t running because she knew she’d be caught anyway.

Evelia spat out the meat she was chewing.

A green eye, still tinged with blood, tumbled out of her mouth.

“Fxck…”

The curse slipped from Evelia’s lips.

She knew.

She knew exactly who those relentless footsteps belonged to. The one who could linger near her without ever revealing himself.

“Eve.”

The dingy restaurant was thick with fog. The people who’d once filled the tables were long gone. From within the mist, a man appeared, calling to her with a gentle voice.

“It’s time to wake up now.”

Smiling warmly, he embraced her. Evelyn swallowed a string of curses, and only then did she open her eyes.

A man appeared in her field of vision, gazing down at her. Black hair naturally fell over a pale forehead. Sky-blue eyes and gracefully curved lips formed a face that could enchant anyone.

Even while looking at such a beautiful face, Evelyn frowned.
