My Perfect Omega - Chapter 124
Though she was a marchioness, Leila and Marchioness Richter were not far apart in age, and they had already become close friends. After exchanging compliments, they looked down at the stage.
“Today is a piano concerto. The pianist, David, has recently become very famous in the capital.”
“I’ve heard of him as well.”
The two exchanged brief words and then fell silent as the hall darkened. Beautiful melodies flowed, and soon the piano solo and the orchestra’s grand harmony began to play.
Time flew by, and the curtain fell. Immersed in the lingering emotions, the two stood up only after a while had passed.
Leila, understanding why David was so popular, spoke to Marchioness Richter as they left the VIP room. As they chatted, they encountered a group.
Leila wanted to personally select the people she would socialize with once she became the Duchess. Therefore, she diligently attended every tea party and banquet invitation without refusing a single one.
However, there was one place she never attended—the Volpf Marquisate’s residence. Unfortunately, the group they encountered was gathered around Marchioness Volpf.
Leila, who had been smiling kindly at Marchioness Richter, immediately erased her emotions upon seeing Marchioness Volpf.
Marchioness Volpf had been close to Sarah in the past and had arranged for Count Wagner as Leila’s marriage prospect. Leila felt a strong urge to pinch the wrinkles on the shameless face of the approaching Marchioness of Volpf.
Anna would probably burst out laughing if Leila told her about this thought.
“Oh my, who do we have here?”
“Oh my, oh my! Is this… Madam Volpf, is it?”
As Marchioness Volpf greeted them first, Marchioness Richter responded in Leila’s place. Leila, not yet married, was merely an unmarried lady by rank.
Of course, no one in high society was unaware that she was the future Duchess.
“…How can someone younger than me always get our family’s name wrong? I should prepare a special remedy from our estate and send it to you.”
At Marchioness Volpf’s remark, Marchioness Richter responded with a cheerful smile instead of taking offense.
“I would be grateful if you did. I hear Volpf’s estate is rich in rare herbs, being so far out in the countryside. Our family only has vast grain fields, so I am quite envious.”
“Haha…”
Leila was inwardly impressed by Marchioness Richter’s aristocratic way of subtly insulting the other. It was more of a direct jab than subtle, actually. Apparently bothered by Leila silently watching their exchange, Marchioness Volpf pointed her out.
“Hmm, I’m still not sure what to call you. Should I address you formally or with respect?”
“Pfft…”
At Marchioness Volpf’s words, the people around her laughed behind their fans. Leila, now unfazed by their antics, calmly spoke up.
“Why not start practicing formal address? I won’t be in this ambiguous status forever. Practicing for the real thing is always useful.”
“What did you say?”
“No, young lady. That’s a very disrespectful remark. It seems you weren’t properly taught by your commoner mother. It’s very dangerous to disrupt order based on future status.”
Though it sounded like advice, it was clearly an insult aimed at Leila. Marchioness Richter was about to intervene indignantly, but Leila was quicker.
“Usually, people address me as the future Duchess. Everyone else has treated me that way… I must have been disrespectful to you, Marchioness Volpf.”
Surprised by the unexpected apology, Marchioness Volpf and her entourage smiled with satisfaction. If not for what followed, they would have been the victors of the day.
“As a token of my apology, I’ll have my fiancé send a gift to the Volpf Marquisate.”
